View Full Version : Max Hair collisions... a myth?

We have had no luck making Max's Hair collide with even simple surfaces properly.

We are making long hair using splines. Spline based hair seems to have no collision detection at all.

Even when converted to guide based hair it still goes through even basic spheres.

Dynamics are on and the relevent objects are selected as collision objects.

Could someone please help?

reactor rope collection? I dunno... just an idea.

that has always been tricky.. i don't think that any hair dynamics is so robust that it doesn't make any penetrations.. you usualy have to use tricks to make it appear ok... i saw even on some videos on joealter's site that hair penetrates the mesh.. but this is not very visible and it passes...

anyway.. i noticed that when hair strands go perpendicular into the polygon, collision solver almost never gets it right.. so try to avoid situations like that when possible.. fast movements are also bad for hair collisions...

can you post an image that could better explain your problem?

Thanks for your responses.

The object penetration is even more obvious as we're using instanced objects for hair. But even using standard hair we had no luck.

It looks like we'll be going to our fallback position of using cloth, which has already given much more reliable results.

Thankfully we don't need photorealistic hair. It's a pity, as the overall hair dynamics in Shave are really quite nice.

someone got news on the hair collisions problems?

got the same prob on simple hair/fur mod on a plane..
the collision object is intersecting with the grass and no collision is simulated at all.
(precomputed on)
i mean in the viewports u can see the effect(live mode)..but however the finished render shows nothing.(stat files used)
i set all values (stiffness ,damping, root to zero and my grass is forced to come up again only by the negative value of the gravity)

after the render finishes u cant see anything anymore..no simulating in viewport now.

is it just a feeling or is this hair-collision-thinggy a big crap?

who got it workin?and which hairsettings do u use?
