Hi I am a student so I have a thight budget. I am going to upgrade I currently have an amd 939 3200+ processors 1 gig of Ram and an geforce 6600 card. I have about $750 available so I am wondering what should I buy. Should I get the new dual processors I was thinking either the AMD 3800 x2 or 4200 X2 and more mowory but I am wondering if buying a quadro card would be worth it and just stay with 1 gig of memory. I currently use XSI and CAD in windows and Realsoft, Maya and maybe Maxwell in Linux. I know everyone says that you can sofmod the geforce card but it sounds like softmoding the card in linux is a little bit dangerous so I would rather not deal with that I was thinking a quadro 540 or stay with the same processor and wait until their prices go down a buy a quadro 1300 or 1400. thanks for any suggestions

What motherboard do you have?

For graphics, I tell people to get at least 2gb. A memory upgrade might be in order. Also, you might want to look at either a 6800 GT or a 7800 video card. A Quadro for you is probably overkill.

An X2 would be a great addition. that 3800 can be tweaked to around 2.7ghz or so. give or take a bit.

I have a nforce 4 ultra and about the graphic cards I think that the 7800 and 6800 ultra cost more than eithr the qudro 540, 1300 or 1400.

Save your money. Besides upgrading RAM, everything is fine. I'm not sure if you have 6600 vanilla or GT, but if it's vanilla, overclock it so it reaches GT speeds. Since your a student on a tight budget, you might as well save it for something else...better food maybe?

the 6800 can be had for as little as about 250.00. The 6600 is just very sluggish in viewport performance. It's not a very good card for graphcis work.
