Actually it looks like they are going this route. There have been minor annoucements by IBM as well as apple about this. They seem to be going with IBM as there chip manufacturer rather than Motorola. Wether or not they are planning on completely abandoning Motorola as a supplier of chips is not clear.

actually it looks like they are going to use the upcoming ibm powerpc 970. And although IBM pioneered the wintel pc, this is not an x86 based chip. It is instead based on the new power4 line of server processors that IBM is developing. I am a diehard PC fan, but it looks like with systems built around this new chip macs may finally catch up to PCs in speed on things other their 6 favorite photoshop filters.

Yep, sure seems to be true, and as a PC user I think it's good news for everyone. Hopefully there will be easier to port applications back and forth and no-one will be forced on either platform.

I had a friend who is a "BIG Mac fan" tell me earlier this year that apple was going to be making their OS run on AMD Athlon's sometime next year.......

I've heard nothing about AMD's.. and I find it a bit unlikely. I heard Intel's 64bit cpu would be used..

I read some article about Apple adopting the next wave by IBM.. maybe this is just counter information to that speculation.

Actually, apparently all the machines at Apple run an inhouse version of OSX.2 that has a complete x86 architecture built in in addition to the PPC code. Only thing keeping Apple from transitioning to x86 is making everyone rewrite all of their programs. After all, since OSX is built on Darwin (BSD), its already half way there. Then again, the only thing that keeps Apple seperate from everyone else is that it uses the againg PPC architecture. I think they are more affraid of it coming under MS's guns and dying out in the already saturated x86 market if they transitioned to it. Macs wouldn't be so isolated then, they would just be pretty boxes..
