View Full Version : Flower
Stahlberg 10-31-2002, 06:17 AM Basically my first closeup hi-res flower, a Kapu Kachri, for Strepsils. The reference was very limited so I can't vouch for the likeness.
edit: modeled and rendered in Maya (mostly NURBS), added background in PS.

Very nice. The flowers are very well modeled. I think the leaves and the stalk need a bit more texture work. They kinda look like putty, maybe they need some more glossyness. It's a shame the Maya renderer doesn't support sub-surface light scattering, that could also help. Can we see a hi-res of your Indian girl avatar pleeeese.

Thanks, yes there's no texture on the stalk, naughty me... :)
The avatar? ok give me a few minutes, I'll start a new thread for it (since the rules have gotten so strict).

hi,
I donno if you have heard the term SSS. its a kind of global rendering sub surface scattering. I think this render scream for it.
I'm sure it will blow the current look and give it an added oooommmph!
Even without it, it shines nicely. I like it.
 little dissapointed with this...SSS or no SSS the translucency of the leaves could have been at least faked, the lighting really aint all that either, and the shadows need work as well...the textures also look very simple and are way more CG looking than even coming close to being realistic...
call me harsh, but your human work shows you should be capapble of making this image far better...i dunno perhaps you only had like a day on this or summat...but to me this struggles to even look professional,... was it being reproduced very small?
of course even the best clients can make an image look crap with poor suggestions and direction, but this image really has me perplexed

Impressive !
And it would be even more impressive if the leaves textures will be fixed a bit as it was mentioned above.
But still, great pic. :)

Derelict, there's no SSS for Maya except in Mental Ray which I don't have. Maybe in Renderman too (though I've never seen a good example of it), but again I don't have it. Yes there's a fake in Maya and yes I did use it.
halo - yes I had one day for this one, 6 different plants in a bit less than 6 days. And no reference basically (some, but very bad, small pics, bad botanical illustrations, and no help on the internet - every pic I found looked totally different from all the others.)
But I thought I'd show it cause it's something different for me, and I thought this particular plant was kind of purty looking. :) Feel free to post some ref photos if you find any - the plant is called Spiked Ginger or Kapu Kachri - I think.
