View Full Version : Softimage change price for Foundation for Linux
Proximus 08-08-2005, 07:03 AM With all the new releases at Siggraph, seems to me that no one mentioned that Softimage had a change in policy, towards the Foundation v.5.0, under the radar, so to speak.
Unlike the previous version, where you could download the Linux and Win versions for one price, now they are separate products and the Linux version costs $200 more...

I see the hardcopy tutorial books are included with xsi fnd 5.0. Thats still the best deal you can get today imo.
Proximus... it's been this way since the first release of Foundations for Linux.

Seriously, that the suckiest move from SI. Want to move everyone to Ms now?

I read somewhere where the reason (maybe unofficial reason, I don't have the source) that since Foundations is a huge draw for newbies, and it's uber-leet-cool-ya-know to use Linux... cuz-M$-sux-pntys... that support costs for FND on Linux would logically be higher. Linux newbs trying to install 3d apps that they have limited (to no) understanding of equals extra emails and phone calls to respond to.
Anywho... I thinks it's justified.

Sorry, but I remember, when the last version was available for download you could get both.
Also to ask $200 more just because they need to provide instalation support would be quite unfair, if is the case.
I agree is a good package, but to me it just feel like they were trying to pull a fast one on unsuspecting users.
Have to mention that I am not affected cause I use the Win. version. When I got it it, included the paper manuals and the DVD's with the tutorials in the box, so that was the best value package.

No, it's not because of support. It's because SI doesn't develop in a platform agnostic enviroment and relies on mainwin for thier linux port. That extra $200 is to cover the cost of the mainwin license. Also the linux versions of XSI have always costed $200 more, this isn't new.

The only thing shaddy about that is they don't advertise a cost different where foundation is listed until check out.

Been that way since at least February, and actually I know earlier, because I looked into getting it. This is non news.

As for why... like I said, it was something I read somewhere, and I do keep up on things in XSI land... regardless of why, it's justifiable IMO.

There is no suppor for Foundation so this can't be the case. Mainwin being the reason should be a good bet however.

There's always installation support... and installation on any Linux system is not anywhere near as simple as installation on any Windows system. Unless you know what your doing... and again, Foundation is entry level.
But yes, Mainwin likely has alot if not most to do with the difference... I retract my reasoning.
This thread should really be moved to the XSI forum, since it's not news.

Since they released a Linux version of Foundations (at version 4.2) It's ALWAYS been more expensive than it's Windows counterpart. They arent trying to pull anything, it's clearly labeled at that price, and is probably that price for a reason (as people have mentioned in the past; Mainwin). Softimage are extremely fair with their pricing - If they didn't have a reason to do this, then they wouldn't do it.

This thread really should be archived because it's stupid :p

Yes sometimes it is a shame everyone can post whatever they want in the news section.
BTW, 200 dollar more? odd thing that in euro's it's only 100 euro more.

I was told the linux version if XSI has a win32 layer of code, so any advantage in using a linux system is gone to buggery right there, what would be the point?

This is simply not true of all software. Maya's linux install is extremely straight forward, doable by anyone with root access. XSI however was indeed a complete pain in the ass in to get installed onto Linux. This will probably change when Softimage quits relying on parlor tricks for thier Linux version. I am with you Muncher I don't see any point in an XSI linux at this point, it's not like XSI supports Mental Ray's linux only functionality.

Seems fair enough if they're supporting a smaller user base on Linux.
