View Full Version : product design- palm pilot
sedric 10-31-2002, 05:09 AM Hey ladies and gentleman, here is my design of a palm pilot. these shots feature a left handed version.....in time i will create a right handed version (so no one feel leftout)
i didnt model the interior of the car, i composited it in photoshop. everything was dome in maya 4 and mayas default renderer
the image below is a 56k friendly version. to see a much larger picture. just click the url http://www.planetquake.com/quakebreak/mywebs/palm_product_page.htm
any crits?

That is looking very nice. I've nothing to comment on this. The Photoshop composite is also good.

first off allan i just say that is a lovely design you have there, Very nice render as well. Do you do the this product design for fun or is it your job. The only reason i ask is that im thinking about getting back into visulation in product design. I just wondered if there is much out there in the way of jobs?????:buttrock:

i think you mean that this is a right handed version correct? the large curved recess on the right side seems to be where the meaty part of my right thumb would rest and my fingers would nest inbetween the ridges on the left side.
the render is awesome. the quality is very good. :applause:
in terms of design though, i don't think the ridges on the left side need to be so large and defined. some softer, more subtler ridges would do just as good a job as well as accomadate for larger fingers. just my take on the usability. i come from an industrial design background.

hehe..thanks for the feedback fellas, i guess i really do need to make a left handed version now! (im a lefty) i would go back and make some of the changes you suggested, but now i gotta get cracking on a car!
i just did this for a class assignment. we had to come up with a product design. i dont really think i will get into product design, but who knows, this was fun.
any other thoughts?
thanks,
sedric

The only thing that would bug me would be having my palm pilot dangling from the ignition while I'm driving. I think it looks good as a palm pilot, just not as a keychain. Nice work, though.

Personally I wouldnt buy one, it looks like a Boy Racer Palm Pilot ;) but its a great piece of visualisation excelent design, modelling and lighting. Well done.

Nice renders and all, but what's the use in creating a right/left hand version if palm already created a nice version that both can use? This would require a lot of extra parts only making it even more expensive?

I was thinking the same thing as Renzsu, but the images and styling is way cool, but not as a keychain item.

Its a right palmed, for left handed writers, pilot. It is a lefty pilot because you cant hold it and write with it if you are a righty. Glad to see a left handed version come before a right handed version for a change :)
