I see a lot of producitons that have used Maya at some stage in the pipeline, however it is often difficult to tell if they were actually rendered in Maya. Can anyone mention a few productions that recently used Maya's native renderer?

Some recent productions have used the Maya Software renderer for at least certain passes.

I believe (and Jackdeth will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong :) ) that they used the Maya Software renderer for certain parts of the opening glacier fly-over on Day After Tomorrow.

I think they used it on Hellboy to an extent too.

We are using the Maya engine a lot these days only because we are rendering Fluids. Other than that, I only use it for rendering matte passes. Mental Ray is our weapon of choice.

We use it for a lot of matte passes as well because it's fast for those and gets us what we need in a short amount of time. mental ray stand alone is what we use as our main renderer with some things (mainly motion blur) done in Renderman.

I read recently that portions of "Sin City" were done with the native Maya renderer.

I have used it on a few big films mainly because I was doing a lot of camera projections from painted clean plates on 3d set extensions all over the place and it was much faster than using mental ray. There isn't a lot that can go wrong with stuff like that. Why make it more complicated then it needs to be.

i think most parts of the first and only german cg movie "Back to gaya" where rendered completely in maya, with very good results
