View Full Version : A tiny question on welding in 3dsmax
yoroba 08-08-2005, 12:36 AM I'm having some unexpected trouble, welding some vertexes on my spline model. It simply won't weld the two vertexes. Here's a pic for you, to visualize what I'm talking about:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v68/redbull/question.jpg
What I'm a doing wrong?

Can you show me what the rest of the orthographic view looks like? Even though the vertices may look like they're close together in perspective view, they can still be VERY far apart. Also, try using target weldfor welding troublesome vertices--it usually does the trick for me. All you have to do is click on one vertex, click on target weld, and then select the other vertex.
Hope that helps. :)

These vertices cannot be weld, you should instead"fuse" them together.
You cannot weld a closed spline vertecies into another line vertex.
The vertecies should be both belonging to the end of the lines for them to weld, otherwise you should fuse them together.
Or my advice is for you to use "3D" Snap tool, setting it to snap on verticies.
Cheers.

Here's the full screen view you asked for, kabojnk: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v68/redbull/Untitled-1copy.jpg
but the problem is solved already. I found that using fuse was the way to go. Thanks for helping me out, guys :)

Damn! Correction! Problem: Not solved! :scream:
It turns out that when I "fuse" the vertexes together, it doesn't weld the little buggers, only align them at the exact same position.
How can I weld those things? Is that what the 3D snap is for, and if yes, how does that work?

yep you must use a snap to superpose those verticies each other , first of all you right clic on the snap icon ,''snap and grid settings '' pops up , make sure only vertex is checked then ok , then move your vertex ..
edit:
one think to add , i rarely use ''editable spline '' ,correct me if i'm wrong :
when applying surface modifier it welds automatically the two superposed verticies, without fusing them.
Splines don't work that way, one vertex can only be connected to two segments. What do you need this for?

You can't weld them. There cannot be more than two segments attached to a vertex so the three-way junction in your example can't exist in a single spline.
Yes, Fuse only aligns them, but you don't need those vertices to be welded for a Surface modifier to work (which I assume is what you're going to do). If you select both vertices you can move them around like you would with a single vertex.

Looks like you'll be converting this to a poly anyway. Just get the vertices in the right place. Once you've converted to poly, you can select all vertices at 0 tolerance, and weld.

Use "Area Selection" to select fused verts with a single click.
To select individual verts, check the "Segment End" option.

Nice Tip  So simple I should have thought of it before ! ;)

Thank you all so much for the replies. I'm sorry my own was a little late though. Fortunately it seems that my problem has been solved (again, yes, but this time it's for sure). When I'm done placing the splines and will then slap a surface modifier on it. Maybe I'll try converting it to editable poly too... Whichever works best.
Again, thanks for all your help. It was really nice to get some good feedback. Looks like I'll be comming back here a lot in the future :)

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but yes, spline vertexes can't be welded unless they are they end points. The best you can do is fuse them and the surface modifier should work. If you area select the vertex and check the modify panel you should see that it says "two vertexes selected (or 3, 4 etc)" instead of one. The only suggestion I can make is make sure you fuse them as you go! I made a huge ground mesh based off contour lines and it turned into a nightmare due to my lack of experience with splines. I had to go back and track down tonnes of vertexes that weren't fused and were messing up the surface modifier. On a car it should be so bad though. Still, it pays to do it while you go, like naming objects.
This was driving me nuts until my tutor explained it!
