View Full Version : Particle effects to impress?

Hi all,

I'm about to start trying to build up a particles/dynamics demo reel using Maya 4.5 and I was wondering what sort of particle/dynamics effects would impress employers (that are looking for Maya vfx artists)?

Are there any effects that you would recommend I try to create?

I'm very comfortable using Maya's dynamics and the only reason why I don't have a demo reel is because I haven't worked on any projects doing vfx.

I would be very pleased to get some suggestions.

Thanks!

hmm..

it has to kick ass.. that is the only thing i can recommend.

the type of effect does not really matter that much, but something customized will surely help (so nothing that can be done pressing some buttons)

very vague i know :)

cheers

as vfx artists often have to recreate natural phenomenas, i'd say, go with that...
- take maya's ocean simulator, move a boat through heavy sea, add crest mist, splashes etc.,
- unleash a storm, maybe a tornado (hit a forest with it, let it tear off the leaves of the trees)
- blow off a house, let debris fly all over the place, don't forget to add fire and smoke
- create swarms of killerbees, fish whatever, make sure they move naturaly, but make clear you've got complete control over the overall movement
- let it snow, rain (show different kind of effects)
- blow off a volcano (don't forget pyroclastic cloud, lava bombs etc.)
- crash a plane into snow, water, ground, forest
- create an avalanche, waterfalls, psunami, springtide, sandstorm
- deconstruct something by crashing it into something or shooting at it
- show subtle effects (cigarette fume, hot coffee, leaves/dust blown by wind on the pavement)
- try to combine it with real footage

well, pretty much all of this has been already done in films, it is quite hard to come up with something truly new ... so stun everybody with amazing detail ;)

good luck!

Thanks guys,

I might look around for some models now on 3DCafe or something. I'm not particular fond of (or good at) modelling!

Hi, maybe the avalanche is a good topic. Try it. I am glad to see your works.:bounce:

The future in 3D is compositing.....
How well you make those effects are great in itself but how well you blend them into film is really what impresses them.

Compositing uses relatively stable technology. 3D effects animation still often involves inventing something new to get the right look.

There will always be work for excellent compositors, but saying the "future belongs to compositing" is a little bizarre, in that it implies that it's going to grow to be more important than it is now or be a hotbed of lively new approaches. It's probably not, on either count.

Hey wow, I started this thread months ago and now it's back!

But yeah, compositors need the effects to composite...

Thats what I'm saying...
Effects are great but even more so with live action.
Look at LOTR and the praise A/W got for it.....
Think of that movie with just 3D effects alone...yuck!
Think of that movie with no effects.....yuck!
Now think of that movie compositing live action along with those effects...wow!

Get yourself a compositing program...get some junking old reels.
Mix it up with your effects and learn to be flexable and have them on your show reel along with 3D alone and live action effects will make employers take a second look.

Well I got a job assistant-teaching Maya at the place where I did my course. But as it turns out I hardly get to go in at all.

And....I'm still reel-less. I keep putting it of cause I have a 'job' teaching.

Careful with this, unless you work at a place that uses 4.5. Sure anyone can click the buttons to start an ocean setup, but what will happen when your employer doesn't use 4.5 and says make me an ocean?? I'm not saying fluids are bad, just make sure you know how to do a basic setup not using fluids/presets as well.
