View Full Version : Some question and bugs
Hello
Im using XSI for a few weeks and I got some questions
1. I don't see all the menu on the sides, here are images so you could see
what Im talking about,
http://www.polystash.com/non_relevant_files/XSI1.jpg http://www.polystash.com/non_relevant_files/XSI2.jpg
How can I scroll down and up?
I tried page up and page down, and the middle mouse button, no luck :\
2. How can I see the number of poly on a object/scene?
3. How do you make a shader?
for example this one (http://www.softimage.com/xsinet/L04_body/content/render/create/spikey-blue/spikey-blue.htm) is it a script or something else?
A few bugs (I think) I got
1. Sometime when I try to render (Q) a parcitle scene XSI crash without any error message.
I have no idea what Im doing wrong, I just tried to render Simulation_Fluid_PourPaint.scn
and XSI crash.
2. Sometime when I open a new scene and render it, I can't imporve the render quality
the small thing (I forgot the name ><) just doesn't appear, for example in the dog.scn
I can't change the quality.
That's it for now but Im sure I will have more in the near future :)

a) sounds like your screen res is too small.. either edit your layout or import a screen layout for 1024x768 ( Xsi requires 1280x1024 at least )
b) the option to tun that is in the camera properties / stats.
c)load that preset ,brek the tree apart and study how it was built.
d)no idea. particles are a little dodgy in xsi at the mo. Could also be your system. :/

Lets go...
1. Truncated menu items
Xsi base screen resolution is 1280x1024 AFAIK. If your monitor only supports up to 1024x768, you have several options. You can right-click right menu headers to get them to collapse. Sadly you cant do that on left menu headers. Next you could make a custom layout, or download one. Look in newview or xsi base for custom 1024x768 layouts. The last thing you could do is prolly the most recommended one, and that is to get a bigger monitor. With 1024x768 max resolution you will be shuffling windows a lot.
2. The number of polys
For selection use shift-enter, for scene use ctrl-enter, for HUD polycount press shift-S and got to the tab labeled 'stats' and turn on what you need.
3. Shaders...
Thats a preset. You can save presets on most PPGs in XSI. For material save a preset on Material PPG. Check the manual for further info.
Bugs...
1.Crash on render
It could be that some demonstration scenes werent updated to latest XSI version. Legacy can break things.
2. Yes, that happens. Havent really found a cure. Right click the yellow region border and go to properties. You can adjust sampling from there. Usually a restart helps.
Thank you both for the fast reply
My screen can go up to 1280x1024 but I don't like it, too small for me.
I download the 1024x768 layout but how do I use it?
About the shader I didn't raelly understand your posts,
where can I see that tree? and what is PPG?
About the bugs,
I never thought that these scenes can be from the other XSI versions,
if I make my own particels there shouldn't be any problem right?
and here is another question,
Im using XSI mod tool for now but can I render short films?
I don't mind to have a large water mark in the film or something like this.

Don't take this as a grumpy old man saying RTFM!, But RTFM.
To find out how to install addons (like the layout) go to the HTML manual and search for Addon... you will be able to find an entry for installing addons. Afterwards you should search for layout, and look for an entry describing using layouts.

Particles can be a bit sketchy... they're not bad, and can do some great things... it's just that as a new user you will need to learn through trial an error, what will cause problems and what will not. The same goes for the Render Region... it's a terrific tool, but as with most production tools, it can be a bit finnicky until you get used to dealing with it's quarks.

Yes.
I just install the 1024x768 add-on but nothing happend, I got
a message that I need to restart XSI but what now?
I try to look for it in the manual but I couldn't find anything about what to do next.

Last one before you REALLY have to start to RTFM, if you installed the layout, go to Application>Layouts in the top menubar, and select the newly installed one.
cheers and start reading ;)

I tried but it's not there :\
It may be that the layout you chose was for 3.0 of 3.5
You'll need to find one for 4.0+
The listing of layouts at the base usually says what version it is for.
I download this (http://www.xsibase.com/tools/layouts.php?detail=1074) one, it's for XSI 4.

After you assigned the material preset to an object (for example drag and drop it onto an object) you can hit '7' to open the rendertree, where you can see all the nodes that build up the material.
PPG is the property page that normaly opens when you hit enter on a selection or create something new.

Cyborg Commando,
Dude
1) go to File, Add-On, install.
2) Seach the directory that you unzipped the addon file.
3) Select it then click install
you will now find it in Application, Layouts. Hope this helps. :)
@bt3d
Thank you, now I know what PPG means :D
althought I still need to learn how to use it.
@fletchman
That is exacly what I did, and after I restart
the software I still don't see the new layout.
Could it be becuase I use the XSI mod tool and one of the limitation is the add-ons?

Perhaps, I personally have not tried the Mod tool. I have read the Mod tool limitations but there doesn't seem to be a limitation on modifying layout. In anycase, once you have installed the Add-On there is no need to restart the app. It should already be there. I have tried it and it works on XSI FND 4.2 but looks a bit wonky. 1280 x 1024 is the best resolution and has more real estate to work in.
Limitations for Mod Tool (http://www.softimage.com/products/Mod/v4/default.asp?pg=http://www.softimage.com/products/Mod/v42/version_limitations/)
<LI>Add-ons - pre-existing add-ons can be loaded. Packaging and editing of add-ons has been disabled.
<LI>Layout - pre-existing layouts can be used. Creation of new layouts is allowed but saving these new layouts has been disabled.
Hmm sound like I shouldn't have any problem with the layout, but I have :|
Anyway for now Im using 1280x1024 it's not that comfortable but I will probably get
use to it, but even when I use this res I still have the first problem in the Animate and Render mode.
Do you guys have this problem also?

For the fun and joy of it why don't you download the Foudation 4.2 demo and see if you still have problems? Then you could "kind" of decide if it's the mod tool or just XSI and you...
Oh, and make sure you download the Online Documents...much better...
The demo I will download just before purchase XSI.
And I don't know why animate and reder are also a bit hidden in my computer
it's just too weird :P
well at least I have the top tool bar :\
Thank you all for the help.
