many people will say :'' yeah you did the right choice '' because you posted this question in a max forum, try put the same question in maya or XSI's forum you'll get answers like : '' are you crazy , drop Max and switch to maya/XSI (or whatever) immediately ''
IMO before investing money try the demos of every package and plugin that interrests you , but you already bought max , i should say stick with max, learn from the help file , tutorials , from this forum or other , use every part of the buffalo , you'll get what you want finally.
good luck.

i guess your next question's answer is : '' Press X ";)

3ds max is a complex program, and just 3d is complex in itself...I've been working with this stuff for about 6 months and I just recently got the hang of 'edge loops' in modelling animatable faces. Before you start spending any major major cash on training for Max 7, I would recommend downloading Blender V.2.37a. Blender is an amazing, high-end freeware program and has a less complex UI than Max, so you better start that off with that first. It will help you get familiar with 3d packages as a whole(they're all very alike, with subtle differences in software architecture or data management), and feel less overwhelmed when you get around to Max.
Seeing that you're a beginner though, don't expect to see results too quickly. But good luck at reaching your CG film goal!

Well, what made you go out and spend $3500 on a program that you are now having doubts about, the question is now irrelavant...
Just learn it, now that you don't have much choice, I'm sure you won't be dissappoited...

If you're a total beginner, you certainly have a lot of things to learn before the differences between the various high-end softwares (maya, xsi, max...) have any relevance to you.
And when you will have reached a level where it does really makes a difference, then you'll also have the level to switch from one software to another easily.
So, IMO, this is not an important question for a total beginner. Just go with what you have now.
