View Full Version : Low poly trees in UT (Environment test)

Hi there !
Here is a little test I have done for a level I want to start soon using the unreal engine.
It is more like an art project than an actual level you could play.
Light and fog are also WIP. I just wanted to see how much plants I would need to get the results I need.
Please give some comments!

im trying to do an overgrown river bank at mo, but im finding foliage on trees and bushes hard to get looking right, at the mo they look a little more GTA than Fable, which is what im aiming for, best veg in a game i reacon, well console game.
would it be pos to show some of your meshes and textures. they are looking good
im having real probs with harsh lines created by the intersecting planes of leaves in trees.
have been experimenting with altering the space between the leaves in the op map but results are still poor.

As I have mentioned, this is just a test. I am looking forward to start the complete level.
Here is a little polyview of one of the trees with the textures I have used. I plan to use higher resulutions for the leafs in the final versions of the trees.
Shepeiro: I have done a riverbed scene with speedtree. Maybe it is some inpiration for you ? :-) The pictures where created with SpeedTree.

tree looks great! I have also been doing some tree tests, we are using the Torque engine for our game so getting trees down to 600 polys and below has been a real challenge for me. It's so easy to just make a tree using speedtree or another plugin, but to make it yourself, takes a ton of time and tweaking. I've been using Paint Effects to make the leaves, rendering them out and applying the texture as planes.
I'd be interested in your tree making process :D

that's awesome scene, is there a skybox with tree's on it as well? in the background? or are all the tree's visable meshes?

To pick up some of you questions:
There is currently no skybox in the scene. It is just the UT fog. This was supposed to be a testscene. But I will use a skybox like I did in this scene (http://www.gamedevnet.de/UTMod_PlantTests.jpg)
Every tree is a visible mesh. Sadly UT does not support a lod system for static meshes. That is why I made the testscene. I have tried to keep the polycount as low as possible.
I will update this thread with some new pictures later that week or mabye I do a completly new WIP thread, because I am looking forward to start with the "real" level soon.
