View Full Version : First character skin WIP suggestions
Dave Hackett 10-30-2002, 04:53 PM Ok, this is the first character skin I have done. That being said, here it is with the uv background. Basically this is a low poly ogre type guy. I started using the grey scale method and will recolor him later. It seemed easier to me. So far I think hes coming out ok, but I'm new at this. I have to do the rest of him, his pants and the rest of his armor for his hands and arms. Any comments or suggestions on how to get good skin texture or scar or that kind of thing? Any help would be appreciated.

For low poly gaming models and things, using photographs as a base usually works quite well :)
So far, it looks like you are going pretty well - it looks cool! Why not just carry on painting in that fashion? It seems like you have no problems painting in PS, so I'm sure you won't have any problems putting the maps together

Alot of people have different methods for coloring texture maps, I assume your character isn't grey and you are just going to use the black and white over some color. One thing I would watch out for is a muddy looking character. adding grey to say a skin color makes some gross skin.
I personally would start using color as soon as I could, because you can get much more realistic mixing of color and you can get some real dynamic bounced light. If you look at the shading of your own skin, the shadows aren't skin color + grey, its more often blue (depending on the light source) and skin color variation isn't just lighter and darker, it's more lighter and pinker or bluer (are those real words) and shades of brown and red instead of black.
I wouldn't start over by any means, see if you can push those things though.
Just some ideas.
