Are proxy parameters a good way to maintain overall and specific controls for animation?

Animating a hand, I'd want an overall slider that lets me open and close all the fingers at once, but still be able to go in and pose each finger as necessary.

What setups are out there that allow for both specific and overall control?

Personnally I use proxy parameters to have individual control over each finger.
Then I create an action for each pose I want (fist, wide open...) and link them to a custom parameter.
All that in a beautiful custom ppg with tabs and groups !

Interesting...

Are you using the actions just to quick-pose the fingers, and then actually keying on the proxy parameters? As in, are all your finger keys stored on the proxies, or are you blending between action keys and proxy keys?

thanks

I'm using actions just to store some poses, then I apply them and key all my proxy params for all the fingers (I created a single button for keying all them at once in my custom ppg).
So in my custom ppg I have a proxy param for each finger bone, and buttons to apply each action I created, and finally a single key button to key all the finger bones, I also have a key button for each bone in case I need only some bones to be keyed.

If you have the DVD set that comes with Foundation, there's a video in there discussion something like this.

hope this helps,
