Title: Normal Mapped Demon Bust
Name: Pablo Hoyos Isusquiza
Country: Espana
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, ZBrush

Hello all! I recently re-made my online-portfolio website, and I wanted to add something cool, quick. (Needed it done before my holidays)

I chose a torso because it would take much shorter than a full body, and it would allow me to better concentrate on the details.

Hope you like it! Please crit and comment as much as you want. I don't think I'll change this now, but I can always learn from my mistakes.

Here are 2 more images. You can find more (including a wire and textures) at my website.

First - REALLY love your work here!

Just curiuos...

How did you unwrap this model? 'cause it sure doesn't seem like a "zBrush-job" in terms of the unwrapping...

And further more - when you unwrapped it, imported it to zBrush (for the normal map), did you encounter any problems working with your unwrap inside zBrush? ('cause I've experienced problems with my own unwraps after imported into zBrush...)

And finally - if you did your "own" unwrap, then probably used photoshop for texturing... How did you handle the seams?

I still want to know how you normal map. It's like the thing to do in gaming, and I read about it all the time in OXM, but how is it done?

Hello all! Thanks for your very nice comments. :) I'll try to answer your questons now>

silentsamurai: First of all, I made a high-poly model in Zbrush. Then I took it into MAX, created a low-poly model over it, and used MAX's Render To Texture tool to obtain the normal map. (There is an easy to follow tutorial in MAX's help. Do a couple of tests and I'm sure you'll get it easily) Other parts, such as the pentagram and the "scales" on the back, were created in Photoshop, and converted to normal-map info using the nVidia normalmap filter for Photosop. Hope this helped. :)

BartosZ, thanks! :) Wished I could have taken the Zbrush further, but my machine was dieing.

Thanks, Tilstrom!

Thanks, m0rdoc. The idea of a bust was so I could model it fast and have lots of detail.

Tobiasniva, thanks. :) I don't know how to get Zbrush to respect MAX's Unwraps. What I did for this model is, modelled the high-poly version in Zbrush and exported it to MAX, where I created the low-poly model. The Normal-Map was created in MAX using the Render To Texture tool, once I unwrapped the low-poly model. So yeah, it was not a Zbrush unwrap job.

Yes, I did the texturing in Photoshop. (Including additions to the Normal Map, using nVidia's normalmap filter for Photoshop) As for the seams, they're not that great, I should fix an obvious one at the back of the head. For most of the seamwork, though, it was just a matter of matching colours, and erasing certain parts towards the seams. A trick I sometimes use is to copy one side of the seam and paste it on the other, then blend it with the existing texture. :)

Thanks, drummer! :)

Thanks to all for your comments. Hope I can still read some more, even though CGtalk's "waterfall-effect" already set me at page 2, hehe. :D
