View Full Version : Pipes, Pipes and more Pipes.
brianellebracht 10-30-2002, 02:19 PM I am working on a project for an engineering company that I work for, and I am showing how they construct their units (HRSG's). When everything is ref. in then there is tons of geometry, trying to figure out how to lower the face count 1,000,000+ let me know what you think, I wasn't going to post this but someone recomeded it so i figured what the heck. THanks,
Brian
P.s., I am not allowed to texture the geometry, and I have to use specific colors for this project. :(

Everything is modeled to scale with all instruments on piping, modeled in Microstation and PDS, animated and rendered in MAYA.
Thanks,
Brian
Last pic unless others are requested.

Are all those pics different shots of the same thing?
brianellebracht

Yeah, different shots at different stages in the project, everthing is on its own file an ref. into a master Project. There are over 50 different files ref. into one master. That is because if any one wants to make a change on a specific pipeline and stuff, it can be taken out and rereferenced in. I still have't decided what type of lighting, and exact colors ect... Not sure witch looks better, but the animation and modeling is 95% finnished. Its about 11 min long. Created for a construction presentation. It shows how the unit is put together start to finnish. Here is another shot of the inside. I haven't rendered the entire project yet.

This specific project (oneta) is currently be constructed in the field.

try to use the lighting to focus on that stuff that you want to show. right now everything looks kind of even.
and why are the pipes lit from the back in the 1st pic for example. i think a regular 3 lights setup would be a lot better, so you can better see whats happening in the forground.

I WILL TRY THAT OUT IN A LITTLE BIT, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND INFO. I WILL TRY THE NORMAL 3 LIGHTING SET UP, AS LONG AS NOTHING IS TO DARK, EVEN IN THE BACKGROUND. THEY WANT TO BE ABLE TO SEE EVERYTHING, WELL BECAUSE PIECES ARE INSTALLED IN LARGE SECTIONS, ATTACHED IS SECTIONS OF THE CASING COMING TOGETHER (WITH THE BOLTS TURNED OFF), THANKS,
bRIAN.
I have been in school for animation for about 2 years now for animation, and I started my position here last week. this is about a weeks worth of work.

holy smokes.. one of the thing that i hate to model is tube thing. altho i can extrude from curve. but still. never get it to the way i want it.

yeah I know it kinda sucks, but it is not to bad in Microstation, then you export as iges and it imports perfect. This is what i get to do 40 hrs a week. : ( but I think its a good start. You can only do so much piping.
here is the same thing with a sketch shader...

Sweet stuff, I did some modeling like that in CAD School. I'm currently trying to get some Rendering work here in my office, I'm trying to show th potential to the engineers, and I think its starting to make sense to them now.
Great complex detailed industrail stuff, will the animation be in a AVI so we can get a taste of what the final project will look like. Maybe a little DIVx codec version.. hehehe
I have some Hubs with racks of equipment for Facility exploration and some Street intersections animated also. if you wish to see.

Thats exactly what I did, I worked here as a drafter, to pay for my animation education, new computer, and a GL1, and I convinced them that using animation could be a usefull tool for Sales and constructability. 6 mo later, they decided to go ahead with it, and bought MAYA, Aftereffects and a really nice dual processor box. It may be a while before I get an example avi up, there, but one is definetly in the making and i will post it in at the latest on Mon. Its not the most exciting thing to watch though. I wouldn't mind checking out your stuff where is it? thanks for your input,
brian

here is a pic of a hp coil getting lifted to go into casing, this was only a test reder, and the colors aren't correct on the casing/frames. thanks,

ohhh...many, many pipes.
I look forward to the animations.
