View Full Version : Photoshop painting tutorials?
Dave Hackett 10-30-2002, 03:18 PM Does anyone know of any good tutorials on painting character skins? I get the uv mapping thing pretty much, I just need some help on some painting tips and tricks. I'm doing poly game work, and any help would be great. I have seen many tutorials on painting heads and so forth, how about a whole character?

Hehehehe oops, sorry I was half asleep yesterday
Well, by the time you get to Photoshop, you should already have a good idea in your mind of how the textures are going to look, and what details they should have in them.
I don't really think that doing tutorials are all that necessary in a case like this - it's just a matter of understanding what need to go into each map (whether it is a colour, spec, bump, gloss, diffuse, whatever map), and from that point it's actually pretty simple.
If you want, I can post some image maps of my own, to show what I do in each of the maps to get my results :)

That would be a big help. Basically, I know what needs to be done to obtain the image I want, but going about it in PS is a learning experiance. There's alot of books on PS but, they are not specific to making a skin to a character or whatever. I guess the nuts and bolts approach to making a skin is what I am after, I can figure alot out on my own. I just need a bit of a guide to get started. I come from a background in figure model painting, I have posted an example below. I know how to do this with my airbrush and so forth, so I get a bit frustrated when I can't get the same look in PS. Get what I'm saying?
Thanks again for all your help.

Cool, I'll get together some of my image maps and post them here...
I know what you mean about it being a bit frustrating trying to find good tips, especially for skin. I normally just paint what I think will look right :)
Anyhoo, I'll dig up some maps and post them ASAP...

Is there anybody who can do a PS based tutorial on painting a skin? That would help all us greenhorns tremendously. I could possibly put together something on poly UV layout in Maya. That is if I had somewhere to put it. I don't have a webpage. Yet.
