The 9800xt is already obsolete, and quite expensive for being so old. DX10 cards will be out with windows Vista, which is in public beta now. What's your a) budget, b) current card, and c) need for a new card?

What 3d software do you use? ati has poor opengl support which makes ati not a great choice for maya etc.

Now that the 7x series Geforces are out, the 6x series are hitting rock bottom prices. Especially the 6600GT and 6800GT are good value for money.

my budget is small 300 if i am REALLY REALLY nice to my girlfriend. I use maya, and mainly wanted one for games( half life2, far cry, battlefield 2) the usual suspects. I have geforce 5600 256 mb not a good card! i kinda lost my respect for geforce, they doing better now though i heard. would dx10 make old card(dx9) opsolete(i think i know the answer to that already but still would like to know)

Get one of these.

I assume you have AGP ? If so, make sure you get an AGP one.

stay away from ati for maya. besides, a 9800 wouldn't even be a major step up from what have now anyway. i agree with rebo.

ATI RADEON X800 PLATINUM @ 229 or PRO @ 199.00 (refurb + 3yr warranty)
This is a offer found over on a deal site, slickdeals.net.
THIS IS A REFURB! But it's straight from ATI and come with 3yr deal.
The Ati X800 PE is a moster card, and list around $500.
Orders will start to ship out on Aug 12th.
You may use "freeship" for the $15.xx off on shipping instead.

I've been an ATI fan for long time, and I do have as well 9800XT256.....

ATI is not that bad, on my 3Dmax config it works very nicely, BUT....if you want to play HL2 and Battlefiel2... do not, and I repeat, DO NOT use the 9800XT, it is not stable for this kind of games, get an nVidia card or new core ATI cards like the x800.

Indeed, the Geforce 6 series and 7 serise are much more powerful, than the older FX series. In fact, nvidia did miss with that particular run of Geforces. However, they have corrected the mistake.

Still if it comes to 3D, I wouldn't touch ATI. Even if i were a heavy gamer. My Geforce 6800GT is probably one of the best cards I've owned in a while. And I must say I'm very put off by ATI's drivers and thier interface.
