how do i convert an instanced object so that it is a normal object? I noticed in the Hypergraph that the node is Pink......

export the scene, not save. export will convert all instances.

....or make a copy of the instance and delete the instanced object ...

There are some scripts on highend that will do this too. One called makeunique.mel or something like that.
