I'm preparing for the next project that we are shooting in Santa Barbara. We dont have much of outside scenes but what we have have to be covered with snow.

Here is the test I did today. Any C&C would help greatly

WOW!

To tell you the truth i didnt read anything and i asked myself, ok whats so special about the snow? Then i saw "Original Picture" my jaw dropped. Absolutly awsome piece. Jaw dropping.

The only thing that i could say may be a little wrong would be the trees in the background, i would think that the snow would be spread more about it. Plus it looks as if you tried to go in with a black and white version, but made it only half way.

here is a link that may help.

The roof looks cool, nice job.

I live in the desert and I don't see snow often, so I might be completely wrong here, but my first impression was that there should be more snow in preportion to the amount on the roof. The trees should be dusted with snow instead of thick patches, and since the street is cleared maybe there should be mounds of snow on the sidewalk?

Nice work!
What software package did you use?

Allright, tips from a pro ! (actually, I am not, but I live far north, so I see snow about 4 months a year ;))

You did a really great job there! Only a few comments / crits:

1- There should be mounds of snows on each side of the road or less snow on the car (that's the way it works, either it snowed for a long time, the roads have been cleared and there's huge mounds of snow on each side of the road; either they cleared it and removed the snow: therefore the car would not have been there for such a while)

2- No more critiques ;)

On the other hand, according to the "style" you used for the snow, I'd say it's a very heavy and humid snow, so, Rojo, the thick patches of snow on the tree are as realistic as it can be (that's really the way it behaves when it's kind of hot outside (between -5 and 5 degrees Celcius, about 20 to 40 degrees Fareinheit (spelling?)))

Great work!

Oh, and the half-black & white look is really the way it looks in winter ;))

 if you didn't say so I would have assumed it was real.

amazing painting for sure. how long did that take??

only thing that sort of stands out to me, (and this was already mentioned i think) is the gobs of snow stuck to the trunks of the two trees out in front of the house.

they seem kind of unfinished, i think the snow on the bark could work the way it is, it's just too solid white at the moment.

but who am i to talk, i've never even attempted to do something like this, and i know i couldn't even come close to recreating a natural environtment over an existing one, like you have

great work, do you have any more we can see?

that looks really great!

I don't like those big stalagtities (sp?) comming of the roof. Considering how wet/thin it is in some areas, that would imply that the snow is melting, in which case those things would have fallen by now.

Some of the show on the trees could be tweaked a little more.

However, you can go into production with no changes and probably nobody will notice the difference. Great job!

Thanks you everybody I will remake it today and post it tonight.

stephen2002: Yeah you right. Stalagtities are a little from different winter condition. Also trees on the background are a little messy, I agree.

wasted weasel: Thank you! It took me about 3 hours yesterday. I surelly have to work a bit more on it. Also you're right about solidness of the snow. I still cant figure the texture of a snow.

Baal : Thanks! I am still thinking of adding more snow on the road sides, but I'm not sure yet. Id rather take some snow off the car. Also, thanks for half black and and white comment. Im still argueing with head of the project. He wants image to be more colorful. But after I add christmass lights it will be better.

Br0nZiLLa: Thanks alot! I used Photoshop and wacom tablet, that's it.

Rojo: Thanks for comments! I agree with Baal though. I have a more humid snow.

derzen : Thanks! Yeah I should redo some snow on the car.

stal3fish : THanks! Considering that his is not the painting that will be use and its just a test I feel really good about it. I will work more on it today, develope some techniques on painting snow and then will do the real plate when we will have the footage. I just have to convince head of the project not to go to Colorado, because I'd rather stay in Santa Barbara and paint the plate the shooting plate there, since actors are gonna be on greenscreen anyway.

LordShaitan : Thanks for comments and for the link!!!

Agree with the comments ragarding more snow on the sidewalk and more snow on the lower part of the fence.

Another thing; - since we can see through the gaps between the fence-boards, it would be natural to see snow on the grass behind the fence...?

Another snow expert here from WI, USA [ we’re getting our first dusting tonight :)]

When I first saw the two pics, to me the JPG compression made the 2nd pic appear fake before the 1st pic did! Very nice job.

The snow appears to be around the freezing point and thus would appear as it does, heavy and wet. You would likely see the icicles hanging down from eaves as you show. That temp is prime for forming those icicles. I just wanna run underneath those and bust them off they look so real :D

The only things that stand out to me are:

1. I can’t figure out why there is so much snow in front of the car. Maybe because it’s pilled up around the tree behind it? It seems to block out the form of the right fender of the car from this view
2. too much snow on top of car in comparison to rest of scene.
3. there appears to be too much snow clinging to the right palm tree at the top left branch
4. and since the snow is so heavy, it would be weighing heavily on those branches and deforming them from their natural position.

Nice job! First one to catch a snow flake on their tongue wins! :bounce:

Its really great, the one thing that I notice is the color of the house is gone. no one wants a house that is painted grey do they? If you can bring that yellow back in there that would be great. As it is, you've got a great matte painting, keep up the good work.

your snow on the tree would actualy break the tree's branches like that, i suggest a more dusted look (or a broken tree?) as wel as ice on the powerlines, those "stalagmiteS" are icicles and are formed ONLY when it's wet snow thats melting so they wouldn't have fallen off.

i see the updates in the cars, and in the background, abd between the fence! looks OUTSTANDING, i have showed to many of my friends and famalie and showed them the snow first, and asked "WHat computer genorated about this?" and they thought, "hmm....maybe the fence in from of the house....i dont know." and when i showed them the original they all jumped back a few steps! hehe, great stuff! i see somethings that have been mentioned be others but looks just good to me :) the new fixes you made really helped out..

in the back right (pointed out in picture) needs snow. it look to me as if that is part of the far house's roof....just stuck out at me :)

lookin great, cat wait for more updates!!

The car looks a lot better now. Still gives me the impression that it got some extra snow from the tree above it, and there's some ambiguity around the front right tire. I'm from Utah, and it's a bit strange to me to see snow on trees like that. :] Other than that it looks like home. Really incredible work. :applause:

It would be more realistic if the non-evergreen trees in the background had lost their leaves. The palm trees are out of place as well.

Holy Facken...
Thats damn good, and in 3 hours??? Your quick with the brush man.
I think its good how its de-coloured and more bluish, makes it colder. Great work making the road icey too
I agree that the trees in the back do need a fair bit of work though

WOW! Totally awesome - I wish I could do this kind of thing.

Only thing I noticed was that the cable ('phone/electric?) running across the pic has been painted over. Maybe I'm wrong, but it appears in the original to be well in front of the house. Just a small detail. (maybe this was already mentioned? )

I guess looking at a plate like this for ages you could find little things here and there but really, it's TOTALLY convincing - If I hadn't seen the original I wouldn't have known it wasn't an original photo.

Nice work
