I'm wondering if there's a way to chamfer an edge during poly modeling? I came from 3ds max, where this was a basic tool in box modeling. I realize I could cut nearby polygons, but isn't there a way to simply select an edge and chamfer it? seems I cannot find any tool relating to chamfering

maybe you are looking for the MJPolyTools - http://www.maya3d.dk/Scripts/MJPolyTools/

yeah, I had hoped so, but it doesn't appear to do edge chamfering (it seems to have vertex chamfering which appears to do something different). MJPolyTools appears to be the equivilent of Meshtools, but even Meshtools didn't have chamfer in it cause chamfering is a basic modeling tool already present in max.

I have to admit, I'm very surprised this is not in the edit polygon menu..... :thumbsdow is there no other options?

what about the the "chamfer vertex together" function - it lets you select several vertices (e.g. vertices along an edge) and it will chamfer the edge - will that do the job?

Select the edges you want to chamfer then go to EDIT POLYGONS>BEVEL. Under segment put 1. Theres your chamfer. Maya uses 1 tool to do many things Max uses 1 tool to do 1 thing. Good Luck

also, with Mjs...try Split Around Edge.....works the same with faves and verts....that should also give u a kind of chamfer

Too bad bevel doesn't work.

Ok it works with one edge, which it bevels nicely, but you just go ahead and try it out with more than one edge...

Although, there's quite easy solution for all the modeling problems in Maya... it's name is Wings3D (http://www.wings3d.com) ;)

Yeah I have also been looking for a solution to doing some quick edge chamfering... I have been stuck using bevel for now and fixing up the fricken craptastic geometry it makes. :thumbsdow

I used chamfer all the time in max too.. because as we all know nothing has perfect edges.

Edit: I played arround with the chamfer vertex together option in MJPolyTools but unfortunatley it does not seem to work all that well.

like i said...try the Mj poly tool method...works great...but it doesnt delete the old edges...

just select an edge....and it will create an edge loop around it. You can then use the slider in the channel box the chamfer around as u like....limitation is that it will only work with quads....and will terminate whenever it meets anything but a quad....
