Hi all.

This is my first post on this forum. I have only about a year of experience with 3d. And I recently completed a model of an 1872 Baldwin Steam Locomotive. Now I'm trying to place it in a setting.
As is evident from my posting. I'm not very good at photo realistic rendering. The original steam locomotive is historically accurate and appears as it would right off the factory floor. I'm trying to make the scene historically accurate as well.
I'm pretty happy with the modeling(except the tree in the background). However, I'm more or less completely frustrated with the lighting and texturing. I'm trying to make this a sunset scene. I'm not happy at all with the results I've been getting. The lighting just seems to dark and uneven.
I've been working with HDRI to light the scene, but I'm begining to think I should try some kind of area light setup. Any suggestions?

I'm using 3dsmax 7 and Brazil rs.

nice model and texture, the lighting with the sky just isn't right for me, especially with the light under the building

apart from that v good ;)

What's up Matt! Photo-realism is a beatiful thing isn't it, but it's so hard to achieve. I would suggest using the skylight for the Fill Light to simulate bounced light (radiosity) and setting up a large spot or direct light at about a 45 degree angle from the camera; this will be your Key Light source (sunlight). Those are just a few things that I would play around with. I know of a few tutorials that'll be able to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. I'll gather them and get back to you. By the way, your modelling turned out exceptionally well.

Hey everyone. I just finished some retexturing and changed the lighting again. I think it looks better but maybe a little over exposed. I will correct that with the next render.

Cheers
