WOW, recently you seem to be able to combine the freshness of your speedy sketches with the results of laborious rendering of longer pieces.
And in that last one it looks like you could do the same thing vice versa, i.e. introduce rendered detail into the speed sketches.
I also like how these last studies have a very detailed texture in places which gives them a nice DOF and makes 'em look a bit like a 3D image rendered to a natural media painting render pass (for which many 3D modellers would give their right hand, I guess, so you're kind of lucky...:scream: ).

conceptual fantasy...the bridge (reminds me of my favorite book LOTR) and the Dragon head, and of course Wolverine (the gooey bile in his mouth and the transparent stretch of his hands are just crazy), love the girls (they look very haute-couture, anorexic fun!)
any chance of getting you to do some sketches on Oekaki boards? I'd just like to see animations of your work...
Btw, your new Avatar reminds me of this video I found on ebaumsworld, it's supposed to make your eyes trained to the flashing lights and when you look away everything seems to be psychedelic in nature and melting...if I find the link again I'll post it.

I've never heard of the Oekaki boards, I'll have to do some research on it. I've been pretty busy, though, with freelance work. I actually shouldn't have knocked this current image out, because of the amount of real work I have. And, next month, my full-time gig is sending me to China. So things will be sort of choatic for awhile.
My avatar is just some pattern I found on the net with some level tweaking. It does have a psychedelic thing going on, though, doesn't it?

NR43 - I have five or so pages roughly sketched as a continuation for that one page I posted. Also, I have some notes jotted down for a graphic novel I'd like to pursue someday. It's rather Orwellian in nature where technology and biology operate seamlessly together and our own sensory organs become spying devices for the government. Ah, someday :) Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate them.

I've been gone for awhile. Went on a couple of trips. One was work related, which I was sent to China. And the other, was a regular vacation to Hawaii. Both were very nice. Other than that, I've just been busy at my full-time gig and doing free-lance. All of which, has left me little time for sketching. In any case, here's a couple quickies: 20 mins apiece.

Your work is amazing.
Ever since i stumbled onto this site your work has stood out and inspired me. In fact your work has inspired me so much i recently went out and bought a wacom tablet and decided to try drawing into photoshop instead of my sketchbook.
All Gushing aside i just was wondering do you use the burn tool or simply change colors in accordance with the different values

Shipleydaniel - Thanks for good word and for dropping by. I haven't posted as regularly as I'd like to. I've just been busy. When things slow down, I plan to post more. Anyhow, congrats on the new Wacom. I need to get a new one myself, it's about ten years old!
Concerning color, I never use the burn tool. I just don't care for the effect it creates and it doesn't really help one's understanding of color. With that said, I can see possibly using it to develop a grayscale underpainting in conjunction with the dodge tool.
Generally, I scribble a sketch like below, create another layer set to multiply and apply a loose wash of color(s). Using this method, your values should be preserved.
Afterwards, I will create another layer and begain painting with opaque color at various opacities.
The golden mean can be applied to color as well. In simple terms, the matra is:
1. A lot
3. A bit
When I apply color, I pick a dominant color (1) , meaning a hue that will occupy most of the composition, then some of another color and a little of another.
Here's a quick example: 1 = Red / 2 = yellow / 3 = Blue
Well, I hope this helps a little. :)

Hi man !
Ow well I worked in a hospital as IT assistant but I decided to stop cause it can be self-damaging if you are not "quite with yourself". Then I'm still writing my thesis and it's taking a lot of time cause of my external stage for FIAT automobiles...
I honestly feel quite tired and sad cause my hand is harddd and heavy and I feel unable to paint ina good way. UFF.
Luckily you always amaze me with your pictures so my desire to paint come back to life.
Greatly organized picture the samurai's one, especially if done in 15 minutes !

LOL, funky is the right word. There's always a fresh and humorous idea when I come and browse your sketches. Very imaginative and the humour has a very unique kind of spice to it.

Thanks Redfrog :) As always your thread is great. I especially like the fact that you show your actually product work alongside your sketches and ideas. At the end of the day, it must be very rewarding to hold a toy in your hand and say "Hey, I made this!" Pixels are one thing, but to be able to experience your art in a real world sense is a different kind of satisfaction. Cheers!

it's interesting that you are expanding on this latest sketch, because I too felt that it had a very strong story to tell.
However, my suggestion would be not to get lost in the surroundings until you decided on the queen's left hand pose - it seems to be the crucial point of the whole thing... beckoning? hesitating? Keeping to herself?

Nice thread. I enjoyed it a lot. I like your impressionist style, although I would see more finished work :D
The last one is also nice. It has a nice classical feel to it.
Would have loved to see a bit more contrast in the first one, but that's just a personal preference I guess.

NR43 - Thanks and, I agree, that one should have more contrast to it. When I get around to painting it, I will tinker with the lights and darks more.
I am not only totally in love with the truly Helzeristic color scheme you chose for the Tarzan piece, but also totally flabbergasted by all of the edges on that tree trunk. Awesome, from the crisp contour to the mixture of highly detail render and loose strokes or impressionist spots.
My only crit now is that Tarzan was kind of invisible for me when I first saw that painting... I was all "wow, the tree! Look here! And there! kay, guy sitting in the middle. Wow, look at that moss!"
you might want to see to it that people notice him again...

Thanks Mu, with the analog piece I'm working on, I've just completed the under painting. When I get to applying color, I'll probably have the detail areas around Tarzan himself and around the base of the tree (below his feet). Plus, I might place a couple hints of a discordant color somewhere in the skin and hair to attract the eye. Honestly, I haven't painted much and I'm somewhat insecure about the impending results, so if I could get the traditional piece anywhere close to the color study above I will be very happy. As always, thanks for your comments :thumbsup: When I'm done, I'll take a picture and post it.

Mmmmmm, I really respect your smooth transition between different textures, but your black and white work is amazing! This just gave me memories of the work in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind...it was just an instant. Love the pen detailing but sketching, keeps the flow going but the idea is still there.

Excellent pose and the cake/smoke adds a nice balance + provides conceptual contrast.
Watch them scribbles though.. kinda takes away from the completeness of the piece. I'm with Serena on colouring these - at least push the values around on the last - you already begun to do so!!

Here are a few sketches I did today.
wow, the dancer is hot! :twisted:
However, the hawtness about her stems mainly from the glossy and believable skin hues which are a joy to behold.
Not that I wouldn't care for halfclad women in general...:D ..., but what I am trying to say is that the curves on the legs don't really work for me.
(noob-crit on the draughtsman of awesomeness to follow which is a bit awkward, but I think you might appreciate it nevertheless)
They are a tad to straight which makes her right calf look a bit like an attachment.
Rebecca did a wonderful review on opposing curves which I am trying to incorporate on everything I draw (and I basically fail on a daily basis, but what the hell...:scream: )

I tried really hard to look for some proportion kerfulffles but it all looks bang on. I like how you raised the eyebrows and lowered the lobes to further push character. Actually, the expression looks great... the eyes scare me

I've been watching while I work, a couple of Vilppu anatomy drawing DVDs. He's really acquired a deep understanding of the human form and it's a real treasure to watch him perform as he instructs. If anyone is looking to enhance their anatomy skills, I'd definitely recommend him -- he also has workshops in Italy, if you're rich and bored :)

NR43 -it must have been a real slow day, then :) thank you for the feedback about the posted charcoal piece. This entry is somewhat similar in regards to natural media and pose. Hear from you later!
I attended a painting class last night, but was late, so the only space available to setup my gear was not at the optimum vantage point. A profile was all that I could get. It's a little like the charcoal piece in that regard. I would have preferred a three-quarter view. I guess, I need to arrive earlier next time.

staticpen - Thanks for browsing :) Well, I did a couple of pieces where I actually filtered-canvassed a blank page and then painted on it in various opacities. In the end, some ridges would still be apparent, which is nice.
However, most of the time, I just grab a texture (such as a cliff wall) and start painting on it. It's the same idea in traditional paint, by splashing down some paint in an abstract manner in order to break-up the monotony and blankness of the canvass.

Wow, a whole day and no one commented on this painting? Hahaha. It really is fantastic. Balding old men are one of my favorite things to draw. I'm not sure why.
Whoa. After I wrote that sentence I got inspired and painted an old bald man. Haha. I didn't even realize I had this window open the whole time.
I got inspired by all the random brushes you use and tried that out, changing my brush to a random one every 60 seconds or so, and wow... it sure helped my workflow a LOT. It only took 25 minutes and it has the spontaneity I'd previously been trying so hard to calculate. DUH. I should have figured the best way to make something look random is to paint it randomly. haha. I'm gonna go upload it right now.
Anyway! I hope I'm not just rambling on. Again, wonderful, and obviously inspiring work.

I can say, that the face on the last one is missing the volume. It's too flat i think... And the tones of it is too monochromatic. You have to add more rosy and yellow to show that there's a skin under the whiting.

This is a traditional painting that I scanned and continued to develop digitally. So, I guess it would be considered mixed-mixed. I have my initial concepts for this piece a few pages back. Anyhow, I reached a stopping point with it. I'll return to it, but I got something else I need to work on today.

Ah, I was wondering when this painting would show up again. I really dig the green you've chosen here, it really pops against the red in the trees. The composition looks fine here, but it looks like you're going to expand the canvas. Planning on adding more background?
Yeah, oekaki painting is fun. They upload directly to a forum, in a manner of speaking, so there's plenty of feedback every time you post, depending on the board you visit. I used to moderate a couple years ago at OekakiCentral.com, so you could try registering there if you wanted to try out the applet. Although over the years they've become less accepting of original art styles... their rooms are star-rated, and people always seemed to be critiquing other people's creative styles instead of their technical flaws.
Either way, definitely check out a couple oekaki sites. They can be quite addicting!
Oh, and I took some japanese in the past, and it's "oh-eh-ka-kee". Dive in!

Thanks Static, actually I had the composition bigger before. Then, I experimented with some cropping and ended-up liking this version better. The character is more upfront and personal. I will probably extend the bottom a tad, though, just so the fingers aren't cropped off. Thanks again.

ah, great! I'm always learning something about color selection when I look at your work. I'm interested to try some more traditional painting very soon, too, as I got a canvas and some oil to work with the other day. Any recommendations on traditional painting books or websites? I think I saw a link way back about uuh... it was a book about traditional painting that you said you apply ideas from digitally. It's probably still in my amazon search history. I'll go look for it.

Matt, I almost always do an underpainting in order to establish values and general color direction. The only exception is when I overlay some color on a line work or when I create an abstract painting and try to find somekind of story or form in it. That frozen dude above would be a prime example of this. Anyhow, thanks for your comments :)

a few posts back you talked about having worked on an acrylic painting and continued it digitally.
Did you scan that one in or did you take a very good photo of the canvas? If you scanned, how long did you have to let it dry (to make sure it wouldn't ruin your glass plate...:D )
I am painting in oils now and was wondering if it's possible to satisfyingly scan a canvas (although I would have to wait much longer with oil colours... they need for freaking ever to dry)

For that particular acrylic piece, it had to be over 10+ days of drying before I scanned it. However, that wasn't by design. I'm certain I could have scanned it after just a couple hours of drying. It wasn't a big concern, because my scanner is old and worn.
In your case, though, I would definitely wait a few days or a week since you're working with oils. It also depends on how thick you work. I suppose if it's dry to the touch, it's safe to scan. You might consider alleviating some of the weight off of the scanner lid with your finger to remove any unnecessary pressure put on the painting.

Daniel, i just finished looking through your entire thread here, its only taken me about a week off an on. I've been inspired so many days now with something like 50-60 pages of work, now that i've found the end i just want more. As many others have commented, i am truly amazed in how fast you are! Dang you can whip through some sketches, and with such an inherent color sense, i'm floored. I feel like i've learned a ton just by looking over your work and reading your color tutorials, thank you.
On another note, I seem to remeber reading that you work for a Slot machine manufacturer? IGT was it? I also work in that field, for a small software company and we produce casino games for the computer. As bad as it sounds, your thread has inspired me to slack on the job stuff, and sneak in some sketching when i can. As much fun as slot designing is, its always nice to get in some soul-art too.
Nice posts on the DSG stuff too, keep it up!

Cenote - Thanks for the good word! I alternate with brushes a lot. It all depends on the look I want to achieve. With that said, the brushes that I use the most are still the basic hard brush and the airbrush. For the Martian pieces, I pretty much used a hard brush entirely. In fact, I turned off the pen pressure and just used level opacities of 40, 60, 80 and 100. It lends a nice hard edge to the pieces. Again, it all depends on what you are shooting for.

Your stuff is really fantastic these days. Its an amazing progression of style you've created. I find your stuff to have a real distinctive quality that is very refreshing when you see so much speedpainting these days that all looks the same. Ooh, I like it. I think other than a pretty sweet color palette, I dig that the light is coming down is arm and only revealing part of his face. The arm leads you in, while the partially revealed face makes him pretty mysterious, which I guess is the whole point. Good stuff.
How long does it take you to knock these out? Have you been doing these for fun or as part of your night class?

staticpen - There's several hours involved in the two Mid Summer's pieces. I couldn't give you an exact number. Perhaps 4 hrs on the acrylic side and a couple on the digital for each. I have another painting, I'll post today or tomorrow.
These Mid Summer Night pieces are just a self-assigned project. I've also been attending a life drawing class on Wednesday. It's actually open medium so I paint the subject as opposed to charcoal or pencil. So far, it has been a greet experience. I would post some stuff, but the canvas sheets I paint on are much too big for my scanner. Plus, they're more studies and less finished pieces.

Wonderful! Both of them, but I'm not gonna lie, I have a sweet spot for spontaneous, unfinished images. The Artist is really great. Are those wet-edged brushes in there or is it just way sharpened?
And speaking of rough images, you should take some pictures of your life paintings! Who needs a scanner, hey? I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would really dig seeing them.

Yeah I have a sweet spot for loose stuff too. There are a lot of areas that are sharpened, blurred, sharpened again, smeared, etc. :)
I'll try and take some pics of my work, it's loose as well. Right now, I'm planning out a traditional piece for an upcoming event here called Art Slave. When I get that done, I will definitely take a picture and post it....well, unless it turns out to be crap.
Just a quickie, messing around with composition and color.
Your thread is always good for a healthy dosis of inspiration to me :)

Daniel, I want to ask you something. The trick in painting is making things look real, not necesarily going into drawing as it is in reality, but in using skill and technique to give the effect to have it look in a certain way. I see the in speed painting and in many artists.
For example, whereas a beginner might go into drawing detail by detail of a complex gothic dress, someone with experience would give it a better effect and with less strokes, some shadows, and have the thingwith some blurs here and there, and you'd have great looking and realistic dress.
Doing that is difficult to me, do you recommend any tutorials or web pages where I can learn that?

arielmedel - well, it may be difficult for you now, but the fact that you are aware of it and appreciate it, is a big step forward. Little by little, you begin to see and understand the abstract beauty that lies within the concrete world. Although subtle in the real world, you can magnify this principle in painting which helps unify and strengthen one's work. John Sargent was a master of this.
I'm not aware of any tutorials concerning this, but there may be some out there.
A great book every artist should have is:
It looks like it's out of print and the used versions are fairly expensive. You might want to check some other online bookstores.
Another thing, is read, read, read. My time spent reading and collecting art books is probably equal to my time creating.
If there's interest, I thought about creating a little tip card that I would post once or twice every week. It would consist of a basic or not-so-basic principle and I would toss in a quick sketch to illustrate the idea. Just an idea.

Okay, here's my first tip card which answers ariel's question.
This is one method of applying some texture to a painting. First, find a texture on the web or just make your own. Set the texture on a layer above your painting and select Overlay from the layer style drop down thingy. Also, experiment with various other styles settings and have fun with it. Afterwards, either create a layer mask or simply grab the eraser tool and begin erasing areas where texture is not desired. Typically, shadows have less detailed, so that's a good place to start.
Many times, I enhance the texture by running the emboss filter over it and cranking up the levels.

This last image almost reminds me of Munch's The Scream. Pretty intense. Very ghostly. I get creeped out by it, which is pretty coo, I guess. Makes me think of that period of time right after Autumn and right before Winter... cold and brittle, but not snowy or anything yet, and no more leaves. I guess it makes me think of creepy, cold knots of wood, hahaha.

Here's another tip.
When I sketch or speedpaint, I generally break down my subject into three values: middle, shadow and highlight. Many times I will start my sketch in grayscale ie the image on the left. I use a solid hard brush for this with no pressure sensitivity. This way the statement stays strong and confident. Afterwards, colorize the image via hue/saturation to create a ground or base painting to work on. I tend to go with a warm light brown, but it's completely up to you. Having a solid ground color will help unify the painting when adding additional colors.
Next, using your values as a guide, paint in the the values with nuance values of another color or similar color. The nuance color values should always be closer to the assign parent value then the other two values. For instance, don't make any SHADOW nuance value lighter than the MIDDLE or HIGHLIGHT value.
Once this is achieved, I will drop the opacity down on my hardbrush to 40% and blend in some shadow areas with the middle areas to soften the image a little. Also, introduce some of the background color into the subject and vice versa. This also helps to unify a painting.

Oooh, I dig this a lot! You always used to say doing a sort of 3>2>1 ratio of colors was pretty handy, and it's really nicely applied here with the greens>blues>reds. I'm also liking this circle my eye is going around in. Great composition, man! That's something I've been working on. Not just applying grids to draw to, but to create shapes and pathways for the eye to explore. Nice job!

Thanks, Static :) The 321 ratio also works for compositions as well (dark, middle and light values). I also use the grid from time to time in order to designate the 4 sweet spots. I do a lot of compositions based on letters. In fact, this page is full of them: the pirates is an "O" composition; the mermaid is an inverted "S" composition; the red door is an "U"; and below is a "T".

Here's another tip:
When drawing with the pencil or hard brush experiment with line thickness. Notice on the first example the line work is fairly continuous and close-ended. The "After" example is different in line thickness and, in some areas, it breaks apart completely. I like this look since it stands apart from the background yet is unified with it. The first example is floating, as if it were a cut-out.
The broken-line example also provides a great stepping stone when creating a full-blown painting. Just like with the drawing, the lost and found edges help unify the subject with it's environment.

exStatic1 - Good question, unfortunately I don't have a good answer. I suppose after awhile your brain starts a process of image association to conjure new ideas, much like brainstorming on a piece of paper. For example, this piece was for the DSF and the theme was "Winter Wonderland." From that, you get snow, then mountains, flakes, eagles, eiskimos, etc. Then, as an artist, you can take liberty in exaggerating those ideas.

I said "goodness!" quite audibly when I saw this last one, man... Intensely awesome! You don't have any progress images of this, do you? Or maybe still have the layers of the .psd separate so you could show some process or something? This is a look I'd really like to develop the technique for.

Mu - Those bullets you listed is pretty much what I had in mind when created this piece. I wanted the textures to lead into the focal point, as well as, having a red/green complimentary color scheme. Thanks for the keen observation!

Hey, thanks man. But I have to pick your brain for a second, cause I really enjoy your brushwork here... are you using a locked opacity or are you using pressure sensitivity? I seem to find that some of the more impressionistic pieces I see on forums appear to have consistent transparency in all of the strokes, which is interesting because I always hear everyone praising pressure sensitive opacity.
clever question... makes me wonder, too.

I use both. In the initial stages I use a combo of pressure sensitive airbrush and hardbrush. At this stage, the number of values can become infinite because of the enabled pressure sensitivity. It's fine for a sketch, but as a final piece you usually have to start eliminating the superfluous values in order to make the composition read better.
To do this, you may want to disable the pressure-sensitivity and paint with a hard brush at 70% (anywhere from 60 to 80 is fine) instead. After this brush is set, I will eyedrop sample the area that I wish to read stronger, then I begin to paint over that area. When that's done, I will move over a little, sample and paint again.
This is also great for enhancing your focal point(s) since focal points should have sharper contrasts. I did this for the dark and light edge of the boy's face, the red and black in the demon's face and for the edges on his sword. However, for focal points, I will usually increase the opacity anywhere from 90% to 100%.

in the beggining of your sketchbook i was like dang this guy is got a really good understanding of form, structer and anatomy gestures and he also has great poses

lilnebo - hey, thanks for the good word :) When I started the thread, my goal was to post a thousand sketches. I foolishly thought I would have it completed by now. My count is 467, so I'm barely halfway through. It's nice to know, though, that I'm making some progress in the eyes of others. Thanks again!

Wow really nice pic, again! I love the details you put in without spending to much effort. This image really talks a story it could easily be out of a moodbord or conceptbook. Really nice.
The only thing that bothers me is how the guy in the foreground is posed. Just the lower bodypart. It doesn't fit to that big mean soldier. It looks either feminin or as if he needs to go somewhere very quickly :).
But I have to say I am very impressed how regularly you provide us with really nice images!

Your sketches are a bit like a good song, man. Or at least this one is, to be specific. What I mean is, the colors and contrasts attract my eye and get me to "hear" it, but once I really started "listening" by looking closer I found a lot of details and intricacies that weren't evident right away. In this example, it's all the action going on in the jewelry and fabric. Plenty there to enjoy! Bravo.

Awesome updates man, you've been on a roll lately and its very inspiring.
As I am trying to get my ass into 2nd gear concerning speedpainting, I am very often finding myself asking questions like "how does he do that?" and "what's the best way to approach this" etc when looking at your work and that of the other amazing artists that can be found in the speedpaint thread.
eg, your last piece, the shark that is swimming under water on the right... Do you paint this in one layer and just pick the appropriate colours, or do you add it on a new layer first and lower the opacity?
Anyway, I am starting to realize -in my beginners mind- that it is all about choosing the right colours. Thanks for sharing your work, it's awesome to look at and it really helps me think about solutions. It's a shame I'm at the office or I'd fire up my Painter right away to practice :)
