Title: Trainstation
Name: Anton Persson & Nicholas Cort
Country: Sweden
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

This is an image made for a thesis myself and fellow cgtalk member PAnick has made. The idea was to take an existing drawing and analyse to what degree the image could be reproduced using 3d.

In our case we chose the follwoing comic book cover by Enki Bilal:
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/7408/quaidesbulles251020033bi.jpg
(Please note that this is not the exact image we reproduced, the original we used can be found in Enki Bilal's cover book L'Etat des Stocks 1999 on page 51)

The process started with an exact reproduction of the original image, which you can view here:
http://130.235.160.249/~ihm02ape/Remake_HR.jpg
(Everything in this image except the smoke is made in 3ds max 7)

The next step was to expand on both the concept and scenery of the original image. That result is the image you see above. Our goal was to create new objects which seamlessly fit into the whole world Bilal created in the original image, while using 3d-elements like specular highlights to make the image more interesting visually. Hopefully a casual observer viewing both the Bilal original and our recreation of it won't realise it has been made by separate artists.

Please view the high resultion image below since the low resolution doesn't do it justice.

This is awesome. Nice job! I love contrast of the flowing organic shapes of the train vs. the blocky concrete structural elements. And as far as recreating that distinct feel and style in the 3d rendering: woah.

nice job, looks very close to bilal's art work! yhe only thing are the buildings, the main texture is great, but you could put mode details on them, like windows and signs. But congratulations!, i also used some Enki Bilal's concept in one of my 3d characters

cheers!

Wow! You're damn close to the original. And the smoke over the train is even more Bilal-like than the original, more reminicent of his latest works. Only a few elements reminds us it's 3d and not 2d (like the wheels). I like how you expended the original to created a new piece. Great composition.
4 stars from me.
Cheers.

Hello all

Glad you guys liked it. I'm the second guy in this project and the one who textured it all, plus drew the smoke in postprocess. It was a nice experience to try and adopt Bilal's texturing/painting technique. It was challanging, but I'm happy with the result. :)

I have never seen the original image, that is cool stuff. It reminds me of Aeon Flux, that old show on mtv. Or Moebius, that kind of style. It would be cool to see some wires and or animation. Keep it comin!

You can watch a wireframe rendering here:
http://130.235.160.249/~ihm02ape/Trainstation_Wire.jpg

The reason for the large amout and strangely placed polygons on some objects is that we hade to break up the lines and contours of our original low-poly meshes to create more chaos and distorsion to match the somewhat shaky lines in the original.

The scene has about 300 000 faces (150 000 polygons).

I'm not usually fond of copies or imitations... Even if it is an excellent personnal exercise, it has little interest to others, in my opinion.
However I have to admit that you really nailed it with this one ! It looks so good I again wonder how Bilal could have made such an unequal looking movie with "Immortel"...

Anyway, good job guys !

I agree. I think if Bilal did the extended version, the surroundings would be darker and dirtier, with smoke and debris floating around. The buildings look too flat and bright.
The cropped version is very, very nice, congrats!

Fantastic work! Was this a result of texture painting or did y'all create a shader to replicate the line work? Great job!

The line work is a result of handpainted textures, the image has no shaders/procedurals.

WOW, i looked at the image before reading on, and the FIRST THING i thought was nice, looks like Bilal. I love the fact you picked a piece of his to do, but more importantly you picked a piece an executed it so well. The smoke is amazing in its own right but you really captured his brush work. I have be a fan of his work since the beginings of HEAVY METAL (when it rocked) and i now am a fan of yours. Thank you for the piece and the momories. I am a fan of you and you partner now.

Thanks for all the comments guys, we really appreciate them!

You can watch an old test animation we made with some really bad camerawork here:[/url]

Some of the shadows acted up in the animation causing the black lines at some places and the smoke from the locomotive is not visible since it is hand-painted afterwards. The animation has not been post-processed at all, it is straight from the scanline renderer.
Sorry about the large file size.

did you do the smoke in photoshop? cause this could have been with volumetrics.

did you do the smoke in photoshop? cause this could have been with volumetrics.
All the smoke and clouds, except the smoke that comes from the chimney on the locomotive, is made with atmospherics/volumetrics. We tried to use both particle systems and volumetrics for that smoke but where unable to reproduce the style from the original. The only way was to hand paint it.

We didn't use any plugin at all, just the standard scanline renderer in 3dsmax 7.

Thanks for all the c&c btw.

Just beautiful work! Very stylish, indeed. Thank for posting the wireframe and movie. Myself, I'd also be very curious to see a close-up of some of the texture maps you're using, and hearing a bit more about how you did the texturing in general. Is the weathering that makes it look like Bilal all in the Diffuse, or did you add a lot to the Bump and other channels?

Anyhow, as you've been given a (well-deserved) award for this, hope you'll write up a tutorial at some point! :)

Excellent work Anton! I think many of recent animation films combiniing 2D and 3D, should learn from your job. Just one comment: to be really challenging, you should try to make the smoke in 3d also. When you said it was painted in photshop it dissapointed me a little.
Good luck!

Fantastic! Great adaption of the original image. What I'd really like to see would be just a small panning animation. Starting with the cover of the book and then fading into the render (maybe) and a slow pan to the left around the people, but still focused on the engine. On the strength of the drawing and the render, I now want to read this presumably children's book.

Great work, wonderful. Love Bilal's stuff anyway, I'd love to see a movie executed in this style.

If you like Enki's work I guess you're aware of 'Immortel' the film based on the Nikopol Trilogy. You can find it on DVD, all his trademarks are there; blue haired ladies, decaying tower blocks etc.

Love the piece, and I'd love to see what you'd do with some of Druillet's work too! MORE!

Extremely exquisite job! Lovely study of style from the 2D design. The only issue with it to me is that you need to blend the firey light reflecting unto the train...which is giving that yummy orangey colour unto the train in the 2D. That's the only thing to me that is missing.

My two cents but what the heck is gorgeous.:)
