Hi I am just wondering if any one else is working on capturing painterly type textures in there digital work. Normaly I see the same old airbrush look but I like the more complex textures of real paint. If any one is working on this look or nows some one that is please let me know.

Thanks for the help. I have been working for a while trying to get the texture I want something like this one I just finished. http://www.thebibleproject.com/art/Girl_Flowers_WIP.jpg . Any other painters besides Mullins you guys know of?

That's really just visible brushstrokes, not really textures. To get that look, you have to paint without "overpainting" by making everything too smooth. Corel Painter is going to be a lot better for that kind of look than Photoshop. Use the oil brushes in Painter will be a good place to start.

Yes I have been doing lots of experments in painter. I can get a nice texture like the one I did I posted on the last message. But the oils in Painter do not do a good job of impasto. I am still looking for something that does. It seems they just treat the impasta as hmm like a raised area. Real impasta you can lift it off the canvas so you get overhangs and shadows etc. But still looking for a way to get it right in digital:)

Believe me, I know exactly your frustration. Digital just can't do it--at least not right now. I even put together some examples a while ago to show Jinny Brown and the guys at Corel the kind of brushwork I wish digital could create: http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/temp/brushwork_examples/brushwork_examples.htm

I've gone back to traditional oil painting when I want that type of brushwork. Maybe you should do the same.

I just had a thought I wonder if you could get a better texture using something like Deep Paint 3D on a flat surface for 2D painting and combine it with steps in Corel Painter and Photoshop hmm:)

Maybe we should get together a group of digital artists trying to get the same things?

Also I have thought about doing a thick impasto painting in acrylic gel and then scanning it in and doing the rest in painter. I used to do paintings with thick acrylic gel impasta and then paint the color over it in thin acrylics.

if you would be able to create such lovely impastos digitally i would be really stunned and qould buy the program at first glimps because i have such a tiny room, that it is impossible to do acryl or oil painting of any kind.

but when i see those and craigs work i always feel like painting in a looser style. the funny thing is, i hated it at school to do impressionistic or even expressionistic paintings.

I've been playing with Painter 9's impasto settings for a couple days now. And I thought others might like to see my results. I even tried bringing my tests into Z-Brush and using the Snake Hook Brush but that didn't work that great.

I have a Flat Oil brush set for painting and to add impasto effects and another variant of that brush to act like a Palette Knife to flatten the impasto and mimic scrapping it off. It's resat is set to 0 and bleed to 100 ala Luna blending setting. I've never gotten the hang of the pre-built Palette Knives (I have no idea how Lunatique creates those beautiful images with it :)).

Also, the default Surface Lighting is usually really strong so I lowered the amount and shine really low. I used a pencil study done by Frank Cho of his Brandy character for testing.

The only problem with Impasto effects is if you save in PSD format (which I like to do to avoid file corruption, saved one file in Riff format -- it corrupted and I said never again) the impasto effects are gone and can't be played with again.

rogfa, are you compressing the saved Riff files (it's default)? That tends to cause file corruption (fyi). Anyway, continue on, i'm not trying to hijack the thread.

Boy, I'm not sure. I only had the one bad experience with Riff files using Painter 6, I really should give it another try with 9. Thanks, I'll look for the compression option.

Basically they are always working on improving Painter, and they do study traditional paintings, paint, brushes..etc and try to get closer to authentic digital versions. The Corel guys do read this forum, so they are up to date with user's wishes.
