How do you soften the edges of shadows created by objects in Max?
If this might increase the rendertime drastically, is there a way to render shadows out seperately (like Maya's render layers) so I can blur them seperately and composite them back in? Thanks for the help!

What type of shadows are you using? For starters, try using area shadows for a quick soft shadow. You can blur shadows a number of ways, but if you prefer doing a comp blur, you can just render the shadow pass under the Render Elements tab (under the render scene dialog).

Do you mean soften the edge of the shadows uniformly, or area shadows that are sharp where the object touches the ground and blurrier as the shadow gets further? If you're after uniformly blurry shadows, use shadow maps and Increase the sample range while reducing the size. (maybe 20 and 512). If you want area shadows, use the areashadows shadow type in the light. What renderer are you using?
