No laughing from me- if it makes you learn, then start where ever you want. In fact- you might be making the right choice- too many times folks bite off more then they can chew.

Things look good. I don't know- but the pieces look a little short- this might be due to possibility that the reference image is in perspective. I'd recheck that. Also- the now (or the top part of) the bishop looks a little off to me- I usually see them as a ball. but I'm just being pointlessly picky at this point. Good luck- it looks great so far

ok this might help you to make the checker background

it's a little long winded but here goes,

1 Open Photoshop and press D to reset teh colours.
2 creat a image 100 x 100 fill the background with white,
3 make another new box 50 x 50, fill is in black
4 pull the black box into the larger white box area,
5 Duplicate the black box so you have 2,
6 move the 2 boxed into each corner, so you have black then white at the top and white and black under it like the 2nd image i have attached,
7 press crtl + A to select everything in the 100 x 100 area,
8 while still selected go to EDIT > DEFINE PATTERN and save it,
9 make a new image size 400 x 400 got to EDIT > FILL and select your saved pattern , should look like the 1st attached image,

Hope that helps.
