Pixar releases Renderman Artist Tools 6.5, now for the first time on OS X

EMERYVILLE,CA - (July 27th, 2005) Pixar is pleased to announce the release of RenderMan Artist Tools Version 6.5. This major new release introduces support for Maya 6.5, Mac OS X, and a powerful range of innovative features including new Alfred data mining tools, true hierarchical subdivision surface support in MTOR, and dramatic enhancements to Slim. Major highlights include:

MTOR

Accelerated RIB generation: A new automatic RIB archiving mode has dramatically accelerated RIB generation times for large scenes by up to a factor of ten.
Hierarchical Subdivision Surfaces: MTOR now provides full support for Maya hierarchical subdivision surfaces, including hierarchical UV’s.

Maya Hair: MTOR now renders Maya Hair automatically without additional setup. Additionally, MTOR also renders Maya Fur automatically.

Slim

A Revamped UI

Improved Appearance Editor, List View, and Palette Editor.

Improved Shader Management

Bundles: Now simplify shader networks by bundling sub-hierarchies of a network with its own custom parameters.

Shader Instances: Instead of duplicating an entire shader network to create another version of a shader, create a lightweight “instance” and tweak its parameters independently from its master.

New Slim Nodes

Streamlined shader library: Slim's default shading nodes have been revisited and streamlined, allowing a greater variety of shading models to be created with far fewer, yet more flexible, nodes.

3D/2D Bake Node: Now any point in a shading network can be baked into a 3D brick map or a surface-parameterized 2D texture map.

SL Boxes: Allows custom RSL functions to be built directly into Slim shading networks.

Enhanced Image Based Lighting: Image based lighting schemes, including HDRI techniques, are now fully integrated into Slim's standard nodes.

Improved AOV Support: Now Slim's shading nodes can automatically generate pre-defined set of arbitrary output variables (AOV’s)

Alfred

MySQL Data Mining: Project BatCave: The BatCave is a sophisticated render management system that can present a complete up-to-the-minute view of all Alfred jobs in a studio and can also construct a job history of an entire production. The BatCave gives direct control over any Alfred job on the network for more efficient render wrangling.

Unicast Metrics: Alfservers can now communicate directly with the maitre’d, which can substantially reduce Alfred's impact on network traffic.

the bundling of networks into one with custom parameters is something I wish other network based rendertrees would do (XSI is my primary wish)

Houdini does that throughout the entire software.

This is cool and all, but I'd be pretty disappointed if Alias releases Maya 7 in a few days.

I know those who use RAT probably don't feel the need for the latest Maya version, but I don't see why they wouldn't try to synchronize the releases.

Of course, it could be a sign that Maya 7 WON'T be coming out anytime soon.

Nah, Pixar will just release a 6.5.1 version to support Maya 7 soon after.

Or just recompile and bundle the Maya 7 version in with it?

RAT 6.5 is the best release they've had for a long time, especally the updates to Slim.
