My apologies to all those who are expecting a food fight. Is it possible to change a thread title? If it is I'd love to know how.

Title - Death of a Peculiar Salesman

Finally finished!

I must warn you guys that this is a strange one. But I like it that way.

I'm actually changing my title to - The Eviction -
I'm going to be staying at a beach house which belongs to a friend's friend's grandmother next week and hope to shoot it all there in two days. Stop motion with people.

I love the mood of the shot :) VFX or not. BTW, is that blur intentional or is it caused by the stop motion thing? Anyways it's interresting.
Later.
-IS-

stepington
08-08-2005, 06:46 PM
It's intentional - I rendered it plain - then a full blur - then made an animated opacity map to make the blur sporatic and choppy.

I'm debating with myself weather or not to put film scratches on the surface. I think it would suit the mood - but then again it kind of feels contrived, overdone, and cheesy. What do you think?

Thanks for posting comments about your piece, igor. Now to return the deed.

For this project I chiefly wanted to focus on a love for silent film. Turn of the century (20th) cinema has a remarkable ability to incite the awe of its original audience (at least for me anyway ). Also, whenever I think of themes of conflict or fighting - I tend to think of chaplin or the three stooges. I enjoy the use of flat still camera work in succession - a vaudeville quality in the action.

hmmmm . . . . influences. . .influences. . .
In the case of this project I'd have to say -

Charlie Chaplin - not his iconography so much as his body of work.

Windsor McKay - fun fun fun

Georges Melies - truely magical...he has the power to make me 5 years old without dumbing down his medium.

LUMIERE - the documentary/compilation called Lumiere (lumiere cam given to 40 contemporary directors)

Mikhail Bulgakov - his humanity and synicism stuck in a Beautiful ball of imagination - he was not a film maker but somehow when I read his novels I feel like he was.

Lucas's - THX-1138

NOTE -I mention these names as inspirations - and never as lofty self image:scream:. . .

Golly, there are so many. I could add nuances to this list forever.

stepington
08-14-2005, 03:56 PM
Lt.Hinkle - thanks for the encouragements and voting for yellow! The more I piece these shots together - the less I can imagine the film without it.:D

Igor Sandman - I agree, it's nice to analyze the self and turn the abstract impulses into something that's concrete and arguable. Also - it turns what could initially something out of left field into a more tangible 2 minutes for the viewers. I don't know if any of my listed inspirations will even be apparent in the final product - but at least they are fuel for thought.

good work steph!! I just found a lot of things i've already done and a lot that i want to do in your work (and in igor's one to be fair). A lot of inspiration! (for the yellow thing, I really love yellow but I think here is just a little too...er..."yellow", but I would definitely keep the basic hue just a little less strong).

in the little animation I noticed that there is a little vignetting but strangely it's a bit square. Is this wanted or an effect of the resize or another thing?
in the bigger frame (the one where you are lying on the shoreline) there is a lot of noise that is not monochrome i was wondering if you have added some.

stepington
08-15-2005, 10:46 PM
thanks, zakkos!

My girlfriend is in agreement with you. I for one love the saturation. But then again it could have a lot to do with my unhealthy fixation for coffee. . .

I'll try to tone it down a bit - but if I feel the slightest bit sad - then I'll probably keep it as is.

in the bigger frame (the one where you are lying on the shoreline) there is a lot of noise that is not monochrome i was wondering if you have added some.

yeah - that is my fault for putting grain in there after going to monochrome - I'll have to fix that.

thanks sergio! yeah - the giant film last month was too big a project to chew while trying to move across town. very regretful.

I'm still doing post on this month's film. Everything you see in the storyboard that's black and white still needs to be tinkered with.

I'm also doing sound at the moment - so I'll probably continue working on it right up until deadline.

WOW! you're movie is coming along really great! looks like you planned it very well.i really can't wait to see the final, but put a bit of red in that yellow, because the yellow makes it look repulsive. thats not an insult but just the effect that the colour has. but if you really want the yellow its your film :P

nicee shots you ve got there!!!

not so shure about the editing (pacing)
Id speed up some points and cut some others a bit faster.... (bridge, walks that short of stuff)
Id like to have seen some close ups during the fight.....

Overall GREAT!

heh! yeah, it's the earwax effect. I'll tinker with less saturations - perhaps some reds.

gotcha, yeah - i wasn't really sure how "silent film" i wanted to be - for example in Metropolis you have a lot of really long static camera work - particularly during the panic scenes at the end. Caffinated performances in combination with slow camera work add to the surrealness of those aged great films (they were still used to the stage).

But i didn't really stick to that rule for many of the shots- so it probably comes across as slightly less planned and not very comfortable in its own skin.

I'll also tinker with the beaurocrat's approach to the shore.

thanks for the feedback!

I really love how it flow between shot #18 & #19 (according to your sb)
BTW who is behind you(?) in shot #26 in the sb??:)

I still think you have a strange vignetting, i mean vignetting is ok, it's the way it looks that feel strange. Is somehow squared (in the inner part) and it moves as it is rotating.

The rest is ok for me, except the camera shadow  :p

stepington
08-19-2005, 04:01 PM
We were joking about that shot 26. My theory is that those are chimpanzees.

The vignetting is on purpose - you mean the falloff boarders? I wanted the image to feel like they are slides - and not really a lense effect. So the brighter center of the image is supposed feel like a projection bulb. I hope that answers your question.

I'm not sure I follow this question. . . .

I got the slide thing what i mean is that instead of a regular round vignette falloff you have a strange squared vignette. I don't know how you did it but normally this happens when you soften a rectangular mask rather than a circular one
http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=78637&stc=1
square vignette

http://forums.cgsociety.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=78638&stc=1

this are exaggerated of course!

stepington
08-19-2005, 04:58 PM
Ah! Yes I actually used both.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1589/vignetting9py.gif
This is the animated map which I drew in Photoshop. For each shot I rendered one blury one.
The blurred image was then used with this animated map as an opacity map in 3DS max with the original unblurred shot on a plane beneath.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7886/example5qn.jpg
For the circular vignetting I simply put an omni light close to the center of the planes.
It's a lot less complicated than it sounds. I actualy enjoy using 3D geometries - it makes it very easy to make adjustments

lol - very true. We had to study the actual play "Death of a Salesman" in high school until we were blue in the face. That title struck me as soon as I changed the eviction into a chubby pig. So for you, my friend, the title is strictly "The Peculiar Salesman." :D

Thanks for watching and following along with this odd piece, guys!

No realy "the peculiar salesman" is a better title. Imagine american beauty called "LESTERS DEATH":deal: please please please change it......

As for the editing , its much better now, (id still tweak it here and there no biggies:love:)
The cut to white near the end is to quick (IMHO) Id make it "fade to white-fade to the ending" which would have a smoother result.

again great work...:bounce:

Thanks for the kind words, sergio. It's nice to have encouragements!:)

Unfortunately the title is stuck. I rather like the title. True, the actual 2 minute minute film has absolutely nothing to do with the Arthur Miller's masterpiece. But I'm a sucker for cheap puns.

PS American Beauty does infact give away the ending within the first few lines of the film. But I must agree "Lester's Death" is an awful title. Unless it's the title of a children's book in which case I'd be the first to buy it! (I'm an Edward Gorey fan)

cool film, to bad i cant say i understand it =)

i have this technical question, that industrial landscape outside the window. i suppose you have made some sort of matte painting from existing photos, or something like that? what i wonder is how you got it to stay behind the walking man, how did you mask that?

what i wonder is how you got it to stay behind the walking man, how did you mask that?

what i did was use a photo of Portland's BEAUTIFUL waterfront. and then cut out the shape of my front porch which i then used to paste over the frames in photoshop (eeasy to do since the camera was on a tripod.) As for putting it behind the man - i had to roll up my sleeves and get down and dirty with the erasure tool. Fortunately at 15 fps it's not as tedious as it could be at 30 or 29.97fps. So I only had to do that for 30 frames or so. I really ought to invest in After Effects.

I've done really stupid things like cut out 400 frame shots before - it makes your face kind of slide to the left - then you start to snap at loved ones-bad things happen when one does that sort of thing.
