make particle emitter
activate hypervoxels and slap on a good setting preferably a sprite one
make a dissolve gradient texture based on particle age
(fade particles in and then out again about 10 frames later)

render full range (ie 0 to 60)
then render again but partial (ex 30-60)

now make an animation of your first render 0 to 29 combined second render 30-60
do the particles pop out/in on frame 30?

was rendering out the final for my october competition
had to re render a part (stopped to adjust a keyframe at the end - nothing to do with the particles)
didn't get the same result
must be some other setting then

will investigate if ever I get the time
off to rerender the whole thing so I'm sure everything is allright
