View Full Version : In need help for the hammer tutorial that come with maya4 ple
Dominic123 10-28-2002, 06:42 PM In maya 4 personel learning edition I am making the hammer turotial from the maya information window that opens up when I start maya. I'm at the part called: "Create a depression at the top of the head". My problem is that on my model this part has know face at the top of the hammer head to select. I can see the inside of the hammer. Will I have to restart the tutorial or is there a way to put a face there?

Is the hammer polygons? If so, right click on the model and choose edges. now select all of the edges that define the hole. Now go to Edit Polygons->Fill Hole.
Hope this solves your problem.

Yes the hammer is made of polygons. I right clicked on the model and I selected edges. Then tried to select the 5 edges that defines the hole. I can only choose one. And if I hold the left button and trie to select the 5 edges I select to much and it doesn't work. How can I select only the 5 edges that makes the hole? I also clicked on 1 edge, then clicked fill hole and a error appears that says: Error: polyCloseBorder works only on polygonal border edges.

Hold down shift, keep it pressed, and begin selecting, you should be able to make multiple selections.

It still doesn't work. I am not sure if I'm doing it right though. I might be mixed up when you asked me if the hammer is made of polygons. I'm not sure what you mean. But I can tell you that my hammer is very blocky and square. Is there a way to print my screen and send it to you? I right clicked and selected edge, then I select the 5 edges, clicked fill hole but the face on top of the hammer is still not there. This is the message that appeared on the lower right of the maya window: Result: polyCloseBorder1.

If you have photoshop you can hit print screen on your keyboard when you have maya open and then open photoshop, create a new file, and hit paste and the screen cap should be pasted on. Crop out the stuff that isn't needed and save the image as a jpg. You can then upload that file here.
Before you do that though, select the hammer with the hole so that it turns green and then choose Polygons->Append Polygon Tool. The edges of the hole should be thicker than the other edges. Select one of the edges and the rest should have little purple arrows on them. Continue selecting edges in order and a new face should "grow" from your second selection onward.
good luck,

I don't have photoshop. I selected the hammer with the hole. All of the wireframe of the hammer turned green. I selected "append to polygon tool". The edges of the hole did not become thincker then the other edges. I also selected one of the edges and the other ones did not have purple arrows on them. Do you have other solutions for this? Or a way that I can give you a screenshot?

to post a screenshot - press alt-print when you are in maya - open Start->Programs->Accessories->Paint - paste from the clipboard (ctrl-v) - save as jpg - attach it to your post

Hmmm,
I'm not sure what to do. Perhaps someone who is using Maya PLE would be kind enough to view the file for you and see what is going on. You can hit print screen and paste into "paint", crop that somehow and save as a jpg and post here.
good luck

I saved it as a jpg and the size is to big. How can I make a smaller size?

Hi,
It looks like you extruded a face several times, but you only rotated the estrusion and didn't translate along the local z(the portion in red). I don't know what the cause of the missing top is but the geometry needs to be fixed so you should either start over or clean it up. It would probably be faster to start over. I have attached some examples of clean geometry, what I suspect your hammer should look like.
The geometry that I marked looks like there are several faces that over lap. When you render this will always be a problem.
Also, if I were you, I would create a polygonal cube and delete a face. Then try to fill the hole using the two ways that I mentioned earlier. Just for practice.
Good luck,

If you're doing the hammer tutorial, you should never have ended up with a missing face on the top of the hammer so somehting went awry somewhere. Also, that group of rotated faces where the claws begin shouldn't be there either. If I were you I recommend deleteing this file and starting again.
however if you're determined to keep working this file, then you should create new faces on the top of the hammer using the Append Polygon tool (>Polygon>Append Polygon). First, press 5 on the keypad to swtich to shaded mode. then go to the Polygon menu, and select Append Polygon. Your curser will turn into a crosshair. then click a corner on the top part where the missing face is. A whole bunch of arrows will appear guiding you in the direction you need to be clicking. Then click another corner, going around the opening (think of it as tracing the opening). You should see the faces being created as you go around the opening. Make sure you don't skip any vertices.. After clicking the last vertex, you'll see a face appear, probably pink in color. Press Enter on the numeric keypad.
Wolah!

use Control+Shift and start clicking... shift can both select and unselect things, but control+shift only adds to your selection.. and Control.. i think its control.. only subtracts from the selection
