I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this question. I'm a newbie who would also like to know, and am in agreement re the cd examples.

It's not just the detail, but I don't think they truly show the tool being pushed anywhere near to the full. Well I hope not anyway.

Have managed to utilise Lightwaves GI, Rad and HDRI to good effect over the last couple of years, and would like to do the same in Max.

Would also like to know if there any good example renders out there using Max and how does it compare to Final Render etc.

I'm not sure if it is possible in Max or effective, but I have used a modeled skylight in Lightwave in the past. Basically a dome with the poly's flipped inwards as an environment. Then a gradianted luminance map is put on it and that is used as your source of light.
The gradient is pretty important and will offer a more convincing effect than straight white, it's also essential for reflections when using metals, unless you are using HDRI images as an environment.

You still need a seperate light for your specularity though. Radiosity will not give you spec highlights on its own. Also I believe you will have to put in a token gesture photometrics(I forget the name) light with the levels switched right down, to get the rad or globals to kick in.

The above might not be applicable, but it's worth a bash, I know you can set your materials in max to be lights ie in the neon example in the tutorials.

One pointer I would say is expect a half decent render to take a long time to render.

This was supposed to be a question, but got a little carried away.

Cheers
