View Full Version : "Text turns into smoke". Any good solution?

I've been trying to make a text effect which turns into smoke and disapear.
First of all I used old particle animation while ago (extremely basic particle effect made on 3dsmax) for displacement map to distort the text. I then use fast blur, scatter effect later on.
It looks kinda alright. (I don't have the file here. So I can't show you right now but might upload it when I'm back home.)
I saw couple of tutorials on the net but they seem to need 3rd party plugins.
Anyone has got good idea or suggestion ?

not bad mister. Like the last part the best. There is a bit of jittery motion, other than that great

Here's my second try.
It's kinda very tricky...probably need some more time..

fxgogo just suggested '3dsmax' to do similar effect. I am actually playing around with PArray now...damn slow though.
I'd better give it a try at home tonight.
It seems that it always need lots of tweaking...

so....thats it...but its another kind of smoking text....;)
size is 40 KB
and made without 3rd plugins in AE..

looks good, derErschaffer
looks more like cigarette smoke but it's cool.
Did you actually use the text as a parent object of smoke? Or use separate particle smoke to wipe out the text?
I didn't use 3rd party plugin either.

Hey Shoutaway , how did you do your second one?
looks very nice!

I used the same particle animation(the one that I used for the first one) as a displacement map. This time re-scaled the particle animation and did time-remap. I think that makes big difference between 1st one and 2nd one.
Btw my particle anim for the displacement map is just simple particle effect(looks like 2d..more like pixelated gif animation..ha ha) based on loads of small square blocks.
and added some blur and bezier warp for smooth distortion. I think that was it. Oops.. blur and bezier warp were for the text not the particle.

trying it now

Try Duplicating the comp a couple of times and offsetting them a few frames. I think this will ad some nice demention to the effect. you can also change the color a bit to add even more coolness.

i used 2 layers....one layer the text which have an liniear dissolve...one layer for the particles...

Hi Gpin. I can't seem to access your links.
It says your briefcase is empty and second one is broken link.
MOVIE - Empty?
AE 5.5 PB FILE - Broken?
Does anyone know a good free web storage site ?
I'm about to setup an ftp, but right now this is my only option.

again..it say 'you cannot access this content'.
If you need free hosting service then

It's really pissing me off......3 years ago.....there was tons of free file sharing systems.....now it's getting tough to find.....
I guess they have to make money in a way or anoher....
Thx for the link....I'll use that.
Everything is screwed !
ANYWAY > THIS WORKS !!!
I had to create a index file......most of the free online storage don't allow anymore directory listing....

is it true ?

just an opinion but if you can get your hands on some stock footage you will get alot nicer look
the ones poster look to much like blur and ripple or whatever
i think it would look alot nicer if it started smokeing on the top and then smoked away instead of the whole thing just blurring out
to shoot stock footage of smoke use a black background for keying
it will look much more proffeconal in my opinion
sorry i don't have time to post an example
maybe next week
keep it ups

your one looks cool Gpin...
i tried a second one...
about 77 KB

Looks good. it would have been much nicer if it's more random movement.

I realize you are wanting to do it without 3rd party plugs (not sure why), but I thought I'd share this:

cool examples for C4D  ...but its dont smoke...:) but its impressive...
thats a new version
about 167KB zipped
Looks like the one I did, I think it's gonna be hard to beat using only AE. I'm sure if you (we) had few more layers we can get a better results. But if we really want to achieve photorealistic smoke, we will have to go with 3d particles or comping the text with real smoke plates.
