I'm reasonably new to c4d ( work in maya usually ), but i need to create a shadow light ( ie. a light that only casts shadows and no light ), is this possible in c4d?

Use Display Tag
and reduce Visibility to 0%.

erm, that seems to stop the shadows as well.

Well, I have to apologize - it seems to be - no light no schadow ?!?
Try this: In the Details-Tab set the Brightness to minus -100%
in the Shadow-Tab play with the colour settings.
Here I get any imaginable shadow colour - but no black so far.
And put just a second light in the scene for a little illumination.

I think this will do what you are looking for.

If you set the Brightness in the Details-Tab
to minus -50% and the Schadow colour
to white you will have definitely no light
but it still casting a black schadow.
