Hi,

I have taken a look at a tutorial someone posted on CGTalk (apologies I can't remember the name of the person that posted but excellent tutorial). It talks about using 'edgeloops' in designing characters and even shows pictures of what an edgeloop looks like, but it doesn't actually say how to create an edgeloop. I have had a look in the 3DSMax help but couldn't find anything.

Is it a modifier?
Another name for inserting vertices?

Sorry for the newbie question :hmm:

Any help or directions to other tutorials greaty appreciated

Cheers
Doddy

Edgeloop comes with Meshtools. look for it at www.scriptspot.com or www.maxplugins.de

It depends on what you mean by edgeLoop.
There are two types:

1) A function that selects a row of edges in a loop (as WMLeeBo mentioned, this is available in the meshtools script for max 4.2, and is now available in max 5)

2) A modelling technique that simulates how muscles work. See Bay Raitt's site: http://cube.phlatt.net/home/spiraloid/tutorial/modeling.html

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I just checked out the website again. The tutorial is by Second Reality (excellent tuorial!).

The link is:
http://www.secondreality.ch/tutorials/modelling/head.html (I know Second Reality already posted the tutorial here, so I hope he doesn't mind me putting the link up again).

Erilaz, I think it is the second point that you mentioned that I need to do. But that one line is basically what the tutorial says to, it isn't enough information for a newbie like me. Perhaps you could expand on what to actually do with the model? What tool is needed to create an 'edgeloop'? or is it just the terminology used and you have to add the vertices in a loop by hand?

All help appreciated

In terms of wiro's tutorial, he really means both terms!
What version of max are you using? Do you have/need meshtools?

The edgeloops mentioned in Wiro's tutorial are the mechanical kind. You select a ring of edges all the way around a model and connect them together, ie. Divide the ring of edges in half.

In terms of Wiro's head tute, you select a loop of edges on the head and connect them together, making a new line of edges.

Does that make sense? If you are using max 5, these tools are under editpoly. If you are using 4.2 or below, you NEED meshtools. Go here: http://www.s21net.com/meshtools/

Thanks for you quick response erilaz.

I am using max 5.

I have just one more question to annoy you with then I will leave you alone .:)

You say that in the tutorial you select a loop of edges. The bit I don't understand is, for example in step 4 the selected edges have just appeared (not there in the previous step). How are they created? Adding vertices?

Perhaps you have already answered this question, if so then unfortunately the answer to the 'does that make sense' question.....is no :hmm:

Thanks
Doddy

It's called connect.

A edge loop is a row of edges that flows in a loop around the model. Not necessarily "around" the model though.

Check this... http://cube.phlatt.net/home/spiraloid/tutorial/modeling.html

There's lots of ways to add detail though. You can cut, connect, bevel, chamfer, create poly's... etc.

As another newbie, I thought I would respond, as these tools have also lately come into my life, well in Max form anyway.

You have two tools like the chappy said under your modifier menu when editing a poly model. More specifically you have to select an edge, not a vert or a poly. If you then hit loop it will follow the selection in a loop and then you can hit remove to get rid of that loop or whatever.

If you hit ring, which is possibly even more usefu;, it does something similar, but at 90 degrees to the selected edge. the best way to explain or understand, is to just have a go. Hit connect afterwards and you will see what happens. It's excellent for adding in details to your model and alot quicker than cutting manually

A good place to start is have a go on a bog standard sphere, converted to edit polymode.

they are excellent tools, and something I couldn't of done without over the last few years, using Lightwaves equivalent, bandsaw.

Cheers for now, and have fun
