View Full Version : DV to NTSC or PAL?
tonyyee 07-25-2005, 09:12 AM :) I am new to DV. I got an old Sony DVcorder from a friend, labelled in NTSC. Then I recently buy a latest Sony DVcorder, labelled in PAL. Both can play the DV tape from each other. PAL <--> NTSC. That confuse me. My brief editing knowledge told me fps and interlace pixel between these two TV systems are different. Why?

You'll need an adaptor or convert the tape to the standard you player is in. NTSC and PAL are two different enities. NTSC is 30 FPS while PAL is 26 FPS or something like that; dont' have the books in front of me.
Hope that helps.

I did some shooting using the NTSC DV. I took out the tape, put it into my Pal DV. It plays and the sound and image look normal! That really confuse me. My Pal VCR never read NTSC tape!

Most of the Sony DV camcoders play both systems. The better ones can even put out both systems via firewire (older ones can only display it on the lcd on in the viewfinder). So you could probably capture both systems in you computer but in order to edit it you'll need to convert one of them, since they are indeed very different. (NTSC DV is 720x480, 29.97fps and PAL DV is 720x576 at 25fps)

Its probably the same Codec chip used for the PAL/NTSC cameras, just with a software switch. If you look at the Sony Z1 HDV camera its 50/60Hz switchable. For shooting highdef at least. don't know about DV mode.
