View Full Version : Head WIP - First attempt at ZBrush
rynomyte 07-25-2005, 04:41 AM Ok, so I have decided to give ZBrush a try finally and have spent the last week exploring the software and this evening decided to give my first head a try. I was actually following the male head tut in the practial gude but mostly only for a general reference...This is what started to emerge so I just ran with it....I think he is going to be a wood imp or gnome by the time I am through. This is after about 4 hrs (like I said I'm learning) and I stopped for the evening at the eyes. They still need work and I still have to add some detail and take him into projection master for the wrinkles and such but I just wanted to see if I could get some feedback on this and see what anyone thought. I will update this thread as I complete the character.
Any comments or crits would be much appreciated! I am learning here so let me know what you think....Thanks.

Thanks omarhib. I did not use any reference pics. I was following a ZBrush tutorial and got bored with what they were making so this is just what evolved from that. Here I have posted the ZBrush wires and some other angles of the face. I hope to have the head done tonight. I comtinue to be amazed by the speed with which you can create in ZBrush! Please, any comments or crits are welcome. Thanks, more to come.

Ok. Here are some updates. I really just defined some more broad areas of forms and after a little more refining I think he will be ready for projection master....I have not used that yet so hopefully it goes as smooth as the rest of this has. I am interested in anything anyone has to say about this...artisticly or technicaly.....So, please, C&C are welcome. Thanks...more to come....
P.S. Does anyone know if it is possible to attach a head mesh to a body mesh from within ZBrush?

:) Thanks orwoFf...He does have that gollum look to him right now. I think when he is done they wont look so much alike. But, I had the same thought as you and I think when this one is done I might have a go at really making Gollum....
Well, I think I have done all I will do to him tonight. I am pretty happy with his overall shape and I think I just want to refine the forehead area a bit before diving into the extreme details...wrinkles, pores, veins, etc..... C&C are welcome! More updates tomorrow. Cheers.
BTW.....one more time.....does anyone know if this head can be attached to a body within ZBrush? Thanks.

Well, I have decided to change him a bit to be a little less Gollum like....those holes are the bases for small horns...I think. Unless I decide that I like them as holes....? Anyway, C&C are most welcome.....more to come. Thanks.

I love it! Great details, and the indentations really bring out the story of the model. The head geysers are awesome ;) Are you planning to do the body too or just some sort of bust?

omarhib, neobonzi, Thanks guys! I would like to do a body for this guy but I am having trouble figuring out how to attach his head to a body within ZBrush....with the high poly count I can't imagine it being very easy to connect the head to a body within 3ds max....
As far as textures go I am definately going to texture him...that will be another new challenge as I have not played around much with the texturing in ZBrush. Tonight I just want to get all of the bigger details into place (mostly the top of the head area, and I have to decide if I like the holes the way they are or if I will pull small horns out from them.)..maybe I will just try it and see what you guys think. Anyway, I hope to have the head completely done this weekend and if I can figure a way to give him a body then I will. Otherwise I will just do the bust and move on...I have a new project I am itching to start but I want to fully familiarize myself with ZBrush on this project first! C&C are welcome. Thanks!
Really nice work.
I have yet to get into Zbrush, had the old 1.55 demo version. I am thinking of getting it, cause for the price, it is seriously worth it.

BgDM: Thanks man! Yeah, ZBrush continues to amaze me every time I use it. This head is my first project and a result of maybe 8 hrs (I am going pretty slow figuring it all out) but that is still recod time for me. I tried the demo but was not that into it....I just decied I had to get the full version to really appreciate it and for the price you just can't beat it! I am sure ZBrush will play a part in most of my projects from now on. Cheers!

OK, I had to put this off for a bit but I got back on it tonight and laid a little projection master down on it....I am not sure if I like the direction that the wrinkles and skin are going but I guess it's not terrible for my first attempt. I might have another go at it again later....What do y'all think?
