I believe there is a .max importer plugg-in that comes with Maya, its either an importer or an exporter. Go to Windows/Preferences/Pluggin Manager, and see if you see it in there to load.

Nope.
There is no .max importer, only a .3ds

It's a bit cheeky but you could download the demo version of Max and use that to convert the files to OBJ or 3DS. It's a fully functioning 30 day demo so if it's a one off deal and you don't do this kind of thing regularily then this is the best solution. If it's a regular thing then better find a friendly Max user.

Try to use FBX plug-in, for max and maya! you can download it from alias.com

If you well use the OBJ. format its' well work fine, but sometimes the MASH get broken.
but if you well use the FBX plug-in, you can even export your animation from max to maya.
or maya to max,

My maya instructor has mentioned a plug in is available to convert 3DSM files into Maya files. Don't have the link on hand at the moment, tho I think its on the Highend3D.com website.

Try to use FBX plug-in, for max and maya! you can download it from alias.comI'm not sure if this has changed, but it used to be that the FBX plugin will only work if you have both applications installed on your computer. So if you don't have a copy of max installed, then FBX won't help. You'll need to find a friend who has max, and then install the FBX plugin for output on his/her computer.

So, I'm using Maya on a Mac. As far as I can tell, 3d Studio Max is not available for the Mac, right?

So, I have a load of .max files which I need to work on in Maya, and Maya can only import .3ds files.

Is there any I can get these files open, without having to hit up someone with a PC and a copy of 3D Studio Max?

From everything I've read I think it looks like I'm out of luck.
