View Full Version : Which "grass" is greener?
limmengwei 07-24-2005, 01:03 AM Hi,
I wish to buy some plug-ins for C4D, I hope you guys can help me out. I wanted a "grass" plug-in, but there seems to be a few which can do the job (dpit, stormtracer, fusionthing etc). I want to know which one in your opinion works best, for me the "best" means it is easy to use and yet flexible for many other usages like hair, good for animation etc.
Thanks!
Regards

DPIT isn't a "grass" plug in, but it certainly does grass well. It is incredibly simple to use. There is a full demo you can download at DPIT2.de. After ten minutes I was already making fields of grass that reacted with wind. You can base it off polygon selections, and other types of maps, I think. It is freaking awesome. I sure you can use it for other things like hair, but it's awesome for trees, grass/plants, landscapes, etc.

StormTracer is also really impressive and very fast for rendering short fur/grass etc... I do not know how the development stand of ST is at the moment, though....
Things have been rather quiet from the Third Party side lately, I hope it means something is coming this way ...

They've been awfully quiet, yes. Wonder if they are building something for the upcoming C4D release.

I certainly hope so, Per and Paul have produced some of the more amazing tools to date for C4d. It would really be icing on the cake after the news from Astrofish, Cebas, Samir's new update et al.

I am sure Per and Paul are working on new very useful tools for Cinema 4D... ;)
Anyway, yes, DPIT can be abused for grass greatly with several wind effects and lead to realistic results. Also big planes can be accomplished with the inbuild Instancing option. But itīs best to download the demo and check it out yourself.
StormTracer is also a good option from what I have seen so far.
So check out what fits your needs most. :)

Hi,
Stormtracer is a very good tool. I love it almost as much as dpit2/3. But I've been having a bear of a time getting small sprites to AA correctly. I hope there is something I've missed to overcome this. If someone know how, please enlighten me. Dpit3 is produces "real" grass that renders faster, however, and without AA issues. To me, and I'm sure some out there may prove me wrong, ST is more of an effects tool and Dpit is more of a modeling tool.

Wouldn't surprise me if storm gets rolled into the next release of C4D. A good sprite-based rendering system that can do smoke, clouds, grass and so on quickly seems like a killer feature for C4D.
