I'm building a prop for my character, and I needed some advice in regards to rigging the prop.

My character is a traveling artist -- she carries around a field easel (think the MABEF M-32, if you're familiar with it). At one point in the animation, she has to set the easel up -- it's a tripod, so it only has 3 majour moving parts (plus the base), but they need to slide into place and rotate around their pivot point.

Basically, I'm just wondering if anyone here knows about rigging mechanical/sliding joints and such. A topic in the help file, a tutorial (visualboo's list didn't have anything I think relates to this). Any examples would be great (3dsmax 4.2) =)

Here are some links to sites with pictures of easels like her's:

Link Two (http://store1.yimg.com/I/pearl_1700_20106226)

Thanks in advance, all!

There is support for sliding joints in MAX. Check the help file. Still, what's to stop you from keyframing the easel's hierarchy. You don't need any fancy IK to do it.
