Here are some images of human's eye.
I have got more criticism of the eyes in previous post
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14912
and I improved them a little.
Please let me know what do you think.

I use Maya 3.0 for modeling.
Rendered by V-Ray with HDRI.

Although the skin looks a bit oily, too much shine.

That's pretty good syomka, as usual.
If I may something, I'd would say that compare with the photo below:

1: I would break up the specular a bit.
2: Eyebrows don't seem to stick to the skin in that area.

http://users.skynet.be/fa009830/Eye_comp.jpg

Once again, that IMHO. :)

keep on the great work.

I think the result is fantastic, dont try to make like the reality, try to give the sensation of you want pass.
I prefer the 3d eye intead the picture.
I would like to see oder parts of the face.
Good work

Brilliant work Peter.
Cant give any crits except It does look a little clean in comparison to the real eye in the rippers post.
mabey its just that your model is a little bit more hygienic and less tabacco stained around the eyes than the real one

Can you tell me, is there an actual chamfered ridge built to create the tear line between the eyeball and the skin?
always wondered if the photo-realists went that far for details?
(and I remember somone criting the level of detail you put into one of your models nostrils):applause:

Great job, very nice eye. I would agree with Ripper and add that the skin around the eyebrow looks a little off to me. Almost like there is too much base makeup on it or something.

But by and large just awesome!

Dude, this stuff is just freakin amazing. I can only hope to one day accomplish the same.
Oh yeah and I would have to agree with the little tiny specular that you can't really notice on the tear dock. And the way the eyebrows don't stick to the skin cause its so noticeable. Jesus.

Dude its freaking nice.

this is impressive!
the only real crits is about the too strong specular like it was already said.
by the way as I am also working presently on eylashes and eyebrows with shag hair, I would like to know if u used only shag hair or did you also tried with shag fur?
I personnaly used shag fur with vectors for the eyelashes and I am planning to use shag hair for the eyebrows because of the more complex structure of it. Could you give me your opinion?
thanks

Woooahhh. I got nothing to complain about concerning the shape of the eye now...really stunning! Much nicer than before.

I do aggree that the speculars could be a bit lower, especially on the eyes themselves but that depends on the scene later on I guess. Great stuff.

Could you please put up a picture of the whole head as it is now?

Looks beautiful man. I agree with everyone else about the skin being a bit oily, the only thing I'd add is that in the lower images, if it was that bright, her pupil would be itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny. Otherwise, amazing work!:applause:

top notch stuff (no surprise there)

Can I repeat Davorel's question about the tear line between bottom lid and eyeball ? geometry or texture?

HapZungLam
10-29-2002, 12:42 PM
you ask us to critique, but your thing is 99.99999999 perfect. i agree with the spec lvl. Also, for the skin shader, it also can lower just a tiny but of specular on the folding areas. And the bump... ahhh, i just feel it is okay but if you tune it donn just a little bit will be great.

or it is because of the specular lvl. hum.. Now, she is like putting on lotions. it works great if you want to make her like that. Since women do wear lotions all the time. but the skin i have is a little dryer.

Brilliant work as usual. Props to you.

crits include the end of the eyebrow as mentioned. Also, the pink color of the tear duct and inside of the lid seams too "pure" of a color. Unless you are going for a "Pinup Girl" look.

Finally, on the third image around the eyebrow it looks like the bump texture is stretching.

As for the eyeball itself... Amazingly done

I think the spec around the base of the eyesocket is correct. Especially late in the day oil builds up there.

Perfect as usual, they really look a lot better. Perhaps you could help us out and share your knowledge by writing a tutorial wich covers detailed texture creation, I've got it very hard, creating detailed textures and my attributes hardly are mapped and when they are it's poor...as you can see in my Jade. The specular in the tear ducts looks fine, but on the skin underneath the tear ducts it looks a little too shiny.

In the lower right hand corner image the skin looks a little high in spec also.

(I aplogize it this has been said all ready, as I only read the first page of comments before replying)

Very impressive work, the attention to detail and the realism of your models is beyond my understanding.
That is why I must ask (I know some of them are trade secrets, but maybe you could give us a hint): Can you post a wireframe to see all the underlying structure? I am wondering, as others here, if the tear line is modeled. And if the corner of the eye is a different geometry.

And the bump map. How do you get all those subtle wrinkles? With brushes from photoshop?

Any info will be appreciated by all of us.

I'm not trying to be harsh here, but comparing an eye to an eye with a whole face for context is kind of generous.

You are just... i have no words! amazing work! :-)

But there's something about the colours that makes it less photorealistic...

photorealistic humans in 3d is quite difficult, what about going black/white?

Wow, that be one of the best CG eyes I've seen. Just amazing. the only thing that seems a little odd to me is the specular on the skin. It's a wee bit too bright for me, but heck, still outstanding work...

I don't think that black/white would be a solution, I think the problem comes from the saturation and the color tone of the skin, here's a test I did in 2 minutes:
http://users.skynet.be/fa009830/EyeComp_a.jpg

It's not perfect of course but I'm sure that with some tweakings Syomka will get a better result.

Awesome work Syomka, your'e the best... : )
I'm not sure if you meant to make it look photorealistic. I really like it the way it is, it has a 3D "look". However if you tried to achive photorealism, I think that "Beefcake" and "The Ripper have some good points. Because skin is translucent, it's practically impossible to make it look photorealistic. (There are some beta-render progs out there though). I'm not sure, but I think that the skin is more redish at places where there are wrinkles also that it's more red around the eyes because of the blood (that's why internet surfers are red/blue around the eyes :). Also, I think some areas on the face get yellow because of the fatlayer under the skin (people actually have that) where there are fewer bloodstreams. (Happens especially when people get cold). Because of the extremly complecated colorstructure on the face, it's very difficult to replicate it, that's why black and white 3D pictures look so much better. Also, because of anti-aliasing or "low"-res bump maps, the wrinkles on the skin often look to soft. (though it could also be a photo retouching issue).

Note much of this goes for people with white skin, when having darker skin the colortones change.

Attaching a modified picture from "The Ripper"

You did some great work, especially glad that you took the time to make the edge of the eyelid more "hard". Many people make it too round, probably because of the SubDivision technique issue.

Any chance we'll see a wire-frame on this? Please :)

He said that he modeled it in Maya but rendered it with VRAY, so within Max as Vray is a max only plug too. so I guess he does the shag hair part in max

I'll improve some places in the eye.
A week ago I came back from sci-fi festival. It was in Nantes (France).
I had a good time there, met a lot of wonderful people. France is a beautiful country.
In the nearest future I'll update my homepage and I'll put some photos from this festival.

Hi syomka,
Beautiful work. Were you inspired by Milla Jovovich in "Resident Evil"? I saw the movie a few nights ago and there is a closeup on her eye that is stuningly close to your version. I had to look up this thread right then and compare the two. If not, you should take a look at the film.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Amazing work Syomka! This is definitely the most accurate and beautiful eye I¡¯ve ever seen made with 1s and 0s.

I saw other people posting really de-saturated and dull-looking post processes on your eye. I think it needs a little de-saturation and curve alteration to make it photo real but just a little. Take a look below:

looks awesome, along with every other piece of work that I have seen from you. the only crit that i have is that the specular seems very strong in some of the images. It is probably the light that you used for viewing. The eye lashes and eyebrows are stunning. I think we all strive for this level of work.

Very nice eye
good mapping too. It is nice to see some digital paint look that good
as compared to FF those maps are oil painted traditionally then scanned
With a custom shader written to provide additional bump mapping to the pores as I have read in a article a while back

I am not to familiar with vertice weights but have used it a bit in one extent.."one time" =|
