View Full Version : Character: Pachytaur game model
sanhueza 10-28-2002, 03:05 AM Hello everyone, since this character is now finished, I thought I would move it from the Game Art Design gallery to this gallery. The character is an elephant centaur, a "Pachytaur." (anyone have a better name? ;) ) I designed the character to be low-poly and with low-resolution textures so that it could fit the standards of current console and computer games. I used LightWave 7.5, Photoshop 6.1, UVmapper Classic, and lots of books on elephants from the public library to create this character.
I will be posting rendered stills and concept artwork. Any comments and critiques are welcome, I just hope people like it. Here's the first image:

i think he's got 4 legs, right? well, if he does, this isn't the best angle to show off your model.

I love the design, but I dont understand the way the front legs go into the rest of it. It looks as thouh he's a humanoid, then a large growth is attatched behind him. You could litterally cut it off and give him a hinder and he would be a humanoid character. If you pull a fer verts around where it appears to be segmented you'd get alot of depth I believe. Perfect polycount for UT2k3..........................:bounce:

way cool.
i really dig'em.
maybe the torso should start a bit lower down the neck?
it seems a little elongated at the moment...
your textures are very rad.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Here he is from another angle:
http://www.sanhueza.com/demo/pachy_back.jpg
Hellrender: That's not a loincloth, it's a leather shield attached to his belt, like armor. And "the goods" has been an ongoing joke between me and my friends concerning this character. Good thing I already used up my poly limit... ;)
Cheshire: It seems that both you and Navel_Lint have a problem with the way the upper body and lower body merge together. I admit that it doesn't look perfect. But I tried to keep the lower body as true to an elephant as I could, and since they don't have long necks like horses, I think sticking a humanoid torso on top of it just naturally looks a little weird. I'll take your suggestions into consideration.
Also, I'd love to bring this character into UT2K3, but I'm not sure how to animate for UT. What frame rate to use, which direction is "forward", whether it uses skeletal information or motion baked into the keyframes, whether the physics handles four legs, etc. Know of any good tutorials?
More to come folks,

Here's what Im using. Theres lots of tools for most 3D programs, Character studio is what Digital Extremes used, and I know of one other person making a non human model for UT2k3. It's a bit harder, but would be beautiful in there.
Hope to see you get him in.
Ive been looking more at all the angles and some pics of elephants, and I have to agree with you. You did indeed get the shape of the elephant in there, I think it was just the angles of the render.
Love the detail in the back muscular structure!:bounce:

Terrific work on the idea/design of the character, modelling and especially the texturing (something that is so important for low poly models). Have you tried it in a game engine yet, perhaps Q3? It would be nice to see some in game screenshots to see how it looks in a game environment.

I haven't tried it in a game engine yet, although I'd like to make it into a UT2K3 player-model when I get the time to try. Here's some orthographic views in OpenGL:

baby: Yeah, I started this for the game art contest on cgchat.com. I entered shortly before the contest ended, so I finished this up afterwards. There were some really great models done for that one, lots of talent in their game contests!

I only have two gripes... 1. wouldn't the elephant part be much larger than the human part, I mean horses and men are fairly close in size, but elephants are much larger. can you enlarge the body with out using more polies. if you did keep it the same, might it look better with thicker legs? 2. could we see the model without all the accessorie? I love the design and would love to fight against it in a game!

The human portion is enlarged to conform more to the elephant's size. So essentially this creature is a giant, and not to be messed with... :D

Hey everyone,
Something has been wrong with the ftp server on my ISP this week, so I haven't been able to upload any new images. So until that gets fixed, here's something to flesh out the character some more:
The Pachytaur are an intelligent race that roam the open savannah. Some scholars believe that their existence is the result of an ancient enchantment self-imposed by a tribe who wished to become one with their totem animal, the elephant. Their own lore holds that they were once elephants, who were gifted with superior intelligence and form by the Earth Mother so that they may watch over the land and keep it pure.
Pachytaur live a nomadic life, traveling together in close family groups that maintain loose tribal ties with other families. They prefer to keep to a peaceful life among their own kind, and rarely involve themselves in the affairs of others. They communicate with each other over great distances with enormous horns. These horns produce sounds that resemble the trumpeting of elephants to outsiders, but to the Pachytaur are a distinct and intricate language.
They have extraordinary memories and record history and knowledge not through writing, but by stories passed down from generation to generation. Their friendship is hard to win but sought after by many for their lore and physical power, occasionally leading them to act as arbitrators between disputing factions.
Their size and strength is out of legend, giving them few natural enemies. Although not aggressive creatures, the dangers of their world neccessitates a warrior caste skilled in battle. Normally appearing slow and lumbering, their fury is unleashed swiftly and mercilessly when threatened or angered. And they do not forget transgressions.
When they feel their end is near, an aged or mortally wounded Pachytaur will leave its tribe in order to die on sacred ground. Songs of mourning and rememberence are then sung by their family and friends which can be heard across the plains.
That's it for now, let me know what you think!

This pic was rendered with a 1024x1024 texture map so that the details would remain crisp this close to the model. Mas viene,

Here's some drawings of other concepts I had for similar creatures. I'd like to create some of these someday too, when I get the time.
This first one is a "Foxy Lady"

Here's what I ended up going with the head design. I felt that a trunk would have been too goofy, and finally decided to forego tusks and make him look more human. By the time I was done modeling and texturing, though, I kinda wished I had stuck with the tusks, like in the top right portion of the previous image.

Here's drawings of the warrior's accessories. I was trying to get a feel of a real culture and civilization behind this creature. The shield and club made it into the final, after being modified a little. I would still like to make the tribal horn at some point, to be used as described in the character background I wrote a few posts back.
