Hi, My name is Carlos and i'm one of the leaders and founders of the fantasy mod PoN.
And i'm going to make a singeplayer map : ).
We are'nt really sure how the envoriment is really going to look like, but know that we'll have a forest.
The hard part is to make it right, but i'll give it a try :).
To make this thing aloe is'nt fun at all, so I wanted to show you my wip pictures : ).

Here is a sketch i made on photoshop.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/4649/testmap6qz.th.jpg (http://img55.imageshack.us/my.php?image=testmap6qz.jpg)
I'm going to build the map from that.
Alright..now start with the mapping ^.^)b !

Mapping an big outdoor envoriment map with hl2-engine is wasting allot of time! To waste important time on this is a mistake & not only that, i don't have the time to do stuff i like to do and do other stuff that i need to do.

i'm sorry for making this thread in general, but stuff just came up ..

Can't you edit the first post, and click delete to remove the entire thread? It should work, if I remember right.

I personally think he made a good decision but should of waited to post until he decided if it was indeed going to become a WIP or not. Symmetrical levels are not good design (usually) especially in single player.

Preproduction in games is becoming very Very important. If you don't like the look and feel on paper then you are not going to like it in 3D. And why waste the time and money if it can be concept out before. I don't do game levels anymore but when I did, I not only sketched the top down but also I did little thumbnails here and there on paper in see what it would look like in perspective. It helped quite a bit as I tossed many top down levels because I found out it just wouldn't look that good in 3d.

hmm an outdoor level in the source engine.. intriguing, shame youve decided to not do it.... mind if i give it a go... im pretty new but i love throwing myself in the deep end... I have a comic to finish toight but if i have time ill make a start later on... i think possibly have it based inside a crater, or something...

Ill post back here with a link to my own thread in a wee while

You too !
Just an advice:
Diciplacemnts are retarded (like they don't block visibilty like house walls so you see al models behind the hills or grounds).
Though if you want to become very good, read these (i finished reading them outside sitting and geting sun).

these tutorials make everyones made maps playble.

http://www.student.kun.nl/rvanhoorn/Optimization.htm

though, diciplacemnts are just retarded. source is allot more for indoors as you can read in the tutorials.

If you're a newbie at mapping, then go to hl2world.com > beginer mapping forum. and ask all newbie quesitons, i bet you'll get answers (though you probobly get a 100% answer in the mapping forum , but they will give you an answer and be assholes at the same time. that won't happend in the beginner forum i think.

so good luck!:bounce:

ps: i hope this post gets posted :scream:

cheers for the tips matey,, Ive noticed you get answers in the hl2world forums... although it usually comes with some degree of abuse, but its an answer one way or the other.

Anyways onwards I go... to probably get my ass whomped all over by the source engine

I also have to advice that you have to note that you won't earn any money in mapping after you've become really and and stuff.
That's why i regret that i did'nt start to animte/model instead of mapping. Because if i started to do that 6 months/1 year ago, then i'd be a little better in animtion and modeling.
Because in that, you earn money. That's one of the reason i quit 100% with mapping ( i'll maybe become lead maper in our game though :/).
But right now i'm focusing more on modeling and animtion.
Sorry if i repeated myself from the other posts ( i'm tired ).

No worries on earning cash from mapping.. i like to create for the sheer joy of creation.

I am also tired just got in from my first day at work (just training but im still pooped).
