Title: At The Funfair
Name: Carl-mikael Lagnecrantz
Country: Sweden
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Photoshop
Hi, I'd like to share my latest work. This one has been lying around for a while but I recently decided to finish it. I used Photoshop extensively for compositing and some painting. I hope you like it. :)

awsome man, I like it.. very good texture work and scene setup.
Good ground work, you can easily see that its not flat with a texture map over.
maybe little to much blur effect behind the character.?
PS. Can you tell me how you did the ground? Iam not familiar to that technique?
4stars from me!

super job
excellent , as usual :) great mood. The blurring in the background looks strange (some edges are very sharp), is it intentionnal ? it does give a surreal / illustrative look compared to the realistic shading and lighting of the scene, but it can be misinterpreted. Anyway great piece, I like that character very much .

Haha, the "shoe"hat is very cool! you got an eye for little details.

LOL. Love the string vest and the boot on his head.
Foreground seems a bit burned out but maybe that's just my monitor.
Background has strange DOF
Cool though:thumbsup:

Great image! Like the humour and style.
A couple of things I noticed, I think the composition of the image could be improved if the man were moved a little to one side, so that he's not so much in the middle of the image.
The shoe on his head is a little stiff maybe, maybe if it was pushed down a little further and the toe of the shoe dipped down towards his head, gravity pulling it down.
I like the little details you've got scattered around the image. Great work!

Wow, thanks a lot for the nice comments and feedback, thanks for the frontpage plug as well! It was a lot of fun working on this so I'm glad you enjoy it. Thanks for the comments on the mouse too, It's good you noticed. He has found a nice spot there I think. :P
To answer some questions:
ErnoBoy - Thanks, the ground is a plane that is highly tesselated near the camera and less further back. It has a few noise modifiers for larger variations and a displace modifier. Then there is also details in the bumpmap and some manual vertex tweaking.
m@ - Thanks a lot, yes there are some sharper lines in the back. I didn't intend that at first but I noticed it and decided to keep it like that since I think they add something to it. Although if you focus on it I guess it can look a bit strange.

I like Only Face and shoe on it.
It seems Grasses are floating , because they haven't shadow.
I think realy there is blood under his skin , good translucence matrial.
Is this SSS?

Hey, thank you so very much for the nice feedback. I appreciate each of your comments very much.
bahman - yes it is subsurface scattering, the shader is based on the brazil skin shader wich I also used for the mouse and the cheese.:)
cheers,

Haha, great work! I love the character design!
It seems you might have some issues with the DOF ...did you do it in post?
If so, you could try to render out a 32-bit defocus/blur matte using a custom shader which would give you this kind of result:
http://homepage.mac.com/bauer/portfolio_shaders/zDepthDOF/gfx/zDepthDOF.gif
Black means focus and white is where you have defocus. This is not the same thing as a Z-depth render and you should render this antialiased.

heheehe, funniest picture I've seen here, I like it alot. His expression is perfect but that boot is the touch of a master.
Some issues with the DOF but I'm sure your aware of it

Hey , you did a great job !
i just have one comment on the blurring of the background , usually a very bright sun will not cause the camera to have a very shallow depth of field , meaning a very bright sun will sharpen all the object up to the back , but of course maybe thats why this picture is very special because to blur the bg in a very sunny day is weird .
nice work!
very nice work. l liked the mouse most :)

Thanks a lot all!:)
Fredrik Averpil - Yes I did it in post with the help of a z-depth pass. I did actually have a completely blurred transition at first but I later added more layers on top wich still had details so I ended up doing much of it manually. Maybe I should go over that part once more, but I can't update the image here now anyway I think. Thanks for the suggestion.

Nice work, I like the concept. The only issue I see with the image is the shadow colors. It seems like your value gradation is backwards. I think the shadows closest to the camera should be darker than the shadows in the distant. Also, all the shadows should be darkest at the base of the object casting the shadow, gradually getting lighter as they go away fro the object. This is only my opinion, regardless the image looks amazing

mschrd110 - Thanks. In bright sunlight the light is very paralell so there will not be much fading to the shadows in that situation. They will be pretty sharp. Not sure what you mean about the gradation, but the shadows in the front are lightened up by what is supposed to be a slightly dusty atmosphere. Thanks for the feedback.
