View Full Version : Murdered Digger
Ognus 07-22-2005, 06:16 AM Been working on my cartoony style.
Here are a bunch of diamond hungry sycophants in a murder mystery my boss wrote and i drew.
They used it at a business planning conference.

I love your style and the piece.
Can you shed some light on how you went about making the characters, for those who aren't up to par with your ability?

Lovely illustration style you've got there. I do, however, feel like the colors could use a lot more pop, especially since right now the dark outlines almost overpower the characters themselves.

Thank you for the comments.
Lotekk, I did put a desaturated layer over the top to dull the colors so they would mesh a little better with one another. Originally the colors are very vivid.
Tip: I always keep all my colors very vivid and rich as a default. They can then be gathered and assembled and adjusted to fit a particular piece.
James: Let me transfer the files from work piece by piece and I will show how I go about doing it. Just a quick explaination:
1. draw the line art and scan
2. put in flat colors. just plain solid colors in photoshop
3. make a layer out of just the colors
4. make a layer out of just the black lines.
5. select black lines, and take a solid brush and go over the black lines with a slightly darker color than the basick colors. For instance, in the dark line that makes the face, I would use a darker peach color to make it a solid dark peach line. then if they wear blue jeans, I would color that line a darker blue. This gives it a wash sort of feel.
6. Detail that bad boy up. Add highlights, freckels, all sorts of fun stuff. ''
7. Stroke the image so that it is all encased in a black border. I like how they seem like "cut-outs" when I do this.
8. make a layer of the flat finished character and desaturate it, and then give is a kind of sepia look. then change the opacity on that layer until the vivid colors become more antique.
Thats all for that style.

The desaturated colors give a nice effect against the sharper backdrop -- makes them look like paper dolls or something. The last 3 -- Jonas, Stephanie and Billy Bob could use a bit more contrast, though.
I love the lettering, and the animals steal the show.
