View Full Version : FX WARS! THE BIG FREEZE:Alex

For this challenge I will be doing a flash freeze, basically this is how the film goes
- shot of park bench, in the sky a fighter jet flies past, environment turns to ice(live action camera match)
-front shot of plane
-top shot of wing in focus with ground out of focus
-focus changes to the ground which is turning to ice
-if i can get footage, a shot of the inside of the jet with the fighter pilot(maybe roto out some stock footage)
-wide shot of plane in the sky getting chased by swirling clouds or something, ground freezing
-shot of the back of the plane starting to freeze
-front shot the plane
-plane flies into camera then into the engine
-engine freezing and stopping
-plane falling through clouds
-plane falls into frozen house and slides into camera, comes to a stop(live action camera track)
-Shot of the back of the plane slowly rising, massive city frozen( live action, cg, matte painting)
I'll try and get most of that in, some of the shots i.e the ones that combine live action may be very difficult, but thats why its a challenge.
Please suggest anything that could make it better:)
Storyboards will be posted tomorrow (just finishing the final ones)
Don't forget the killer robot dinosaurs :D
Seriously, that's a lot of work. Makes what I have planned seem quaint by comparison. I hope you are able to finsh it, I would love to see that scene!

Yeah, I would love to see it too. But I wonder if that isn't a bit much work for two months and one (?) man...

Im going to be animating and editing it, my friend is going to model:) should have the storyboards up very soon:)

Cool, thant's actually similar to what I have been storyboarding only mine just deals with a plane and not any closeups of the ground. I am using a Cessna instead of a jet as well. It will be interesting to compare notes as we go.

Sorry there havn't been any updates, currently waiting for a camera to film footage, lol. Also if anyone wants to help me out or anything modeling i.e i need a almost photo realistic fighter jet or maybe some scenery, pm me if you are interested.

Looking very nice!
But what's gonna happen to your pilot...? You don't want to let him die after such a close call escape and a crash, do you? Make him climb off the plane doing, 'wow that was great, can I do it again' or something... :D
Keep up the good work!

Sorry about the blurs in it, i was messing around in after effects. These are merely testers that i have done, the second one i thnk has way to much displacement, I will fix that, sorry about the bad comp, lol, also testing was looks i can get but comping layer ontop of layer:)

Nice work ;)

Hey man, I like your frozen metal shader, looks cool. Maybe it's a bit too shiny, there are a lot of small snow crystals on frozen things which would diffuse the surface a bit. You could maybe try to layer a very soft highlight shader over the ordinary metal shader...
Keep it up, peace!

Thanks alot for the feed back, yeah i no what y ou mean, it needs a softer look, you no of any good tutorials for this?
08-10-2005, 09:53 AM
Hmm, depends on your app. I would do a search here at cgtalk for "layered shader" or something similar in your app's forum. Anyways, if the metal is coated it would have soft highlights for the base material but also hard highlights for the layer of coat on-top of it. If you gradually freezes the surface I guess you have to bring away the coated highlight to something that is snow affected, but leave the soft metal highlights underneath (the metal is not exposed to the snow..). I don't know if this is true, just my suggestions right from my head..
Keep it up, peace!
