Hi guys,

This is our graduationproject we did for 'Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam', which stands for Graphical School in Rotterdam. It's a story about a lonely balloon in a park.

We (Jesper, Daniel and Dave) made this short in 7 months for our gradutation (so we had a deadline). It's 6 minutes long and weighs 25 mb's. Most important for us was the style (simple), storytelling and animation (this is our first characteranimation! Hell, our first short story!). Hope you like it!

We had a lot of good comments from people of this board. I thank you all for your feedback. One comment we saw returning is the pace of the story and unnecassary shots.
We honored those comments in the Directors' Cut of the film which can be downloaded here:

C&C's are most welcome :D

So our animation is perfect?

Come on people, feed us. :D

We had our share of comments, i'll admit, but those who haven't seen it, let us know what you think, good or bad (but also tell us why?).

Here it works fine, anyone else have the same problem?

Could be an overload or something...I don't know what I can do about it if it's working right here.

But thanks for letting me know!

I was able to download and have to say that I loved it. It goes straight to my 3D showcase at www.enlstudios.com (http://www.enlstudios.com) and you can feel free to send guys our way to download it from there by tomorrow night.

My only crit about the anim was the squeeky noise that he made with some movements. It just didnt feel right. I mean if it was an "air leak" then it would have been best to make him bigger and gradually make him smaller thruout the animation.

Apart from that...everything was great.

Couple of quick questions, What software was used and how many of you where there?...production time? Render time?

Awesome Job,

ENL

Hey ENL,

Thanks for your comments! Also thanks for the placement of Inflate Escape on your 3D showcase at ENLstudios. We are proud of it! There is only one little thing...I could find the entry of Inflate...where is it located on the site?

To answer your questions:

Software: Lightwave 7.5, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere.
Team: Jesper (direction, modeling, animation, compositing, editing, soundeffects). Daniel (animation, art direction, modeling, soundeffects) and Dave (special effects, music, art direction). So it is made by the three of us.

We had a deadline for our graduation, but we did it in 7 months (25 hours a week, next to the homework, schoolwork, social life).

Rendertime was actually pretty fast. We staged it a little bit. We rendered all the elements separate. So the balloon was rendered separate, props etc, enviroment. Background was mostly 2D. Put it together in AE and finalize your shot, then render it out again (a lot faster in AE) en put the shots in the editing!

If you want to know more, just ask.

Took me a bit as I got caught up watching a movie. It is located in the 3D Showcase page.

Would you happen to have a higher quality one?

Well,

Maybe right click, save as... wil help a little. The servers are getting a little slow because of all the attention (thanks for seeing our animation btw.).

These are two mirrors provided by two friendly guys because we are still searching for a mirror of our own. We haven't succeeded yet!

Maybe there is somebody who can host our animation for a while? Interested, PM me!

I hope you can still download and see our animation. Let me know when a mirror is going down.

Thanks for the c&c and attention (and the stars!)

I provided four links to the animation.

If the first two mirrors don't work (which they do actually) you can try the rapidsharelinks (they also work, I tried it 3 times today). You'll have to wait a few seconds for the link to appear, but that's always the case with rapidshare. I think it is your connection then, because here it works perfect.

I'm sorry, I don't have any other links that would work, because these have to work for almost everybody.

I liked it with bits - the balloon itself had just not enough character for me, but the whole 'race' scene with the carriage was terribly fun to see :) good to see such an animation come off Dutch soil :)

one thing i didnt like, it seemed to drag on a bit in some parts, it almost felt like you think the audience won't understand.

other than that well done for finishing it.

just my opinion.

Hi guys! I am one of the co-creators of Inflate Escape. And i am finally finding these comments more useful. Funny how things work out, because we already posted this 2 times.

geekbot you are not the only 1, many people i've met, told me the same... the whole animation could be a bit more "snappier" (= more up to pace, faster, less "drag").

... 1 more thing geekbot... the audience fully understands what happens (in holland at least :D) i say this because our animation was shown in a theatre room with a couple of hundred people... and trust me... they understood it.
But if you had any trouble understanding some scenes, just say so. Everyone has a different view about everything, there's always a chance that someone doesn't completely understands what happen.

Continue with the comments, just be honest, trust me, we can handle everything as long as it makes sense :)

I just wished we had a bigger crew so we could make more animations on a time to time basis... maybe that day will come...

For now enjoy this animation, because we are getting better and better by the minute (trust me if you saw our previous animations u would see the difference), and who knows what we will make in the future...

Cannonball
08-07-2005, 10:19 AM
@geekbot

The editing was done parallel with all the other stuff (animating, compositing etc.). Tweaking was last minute work. I agree the editing of the shots and the flow of some scenes could have been a lot better. Also some scenes could have been better directed to get an optimal effect. :wise:

We don't underestimate our audience, but it was also difficult for us to decide what would work. It's a part of storytelling which we have to get more experience in. This was our first (real) storydriven short btw, so we had to find out where we could move on and where we had to stop to explain some more. We made a few mistakes with that, but again, we learned from that experience. We are only 24, 21 and 20 years old, so we have plenty of time to get it right some day.

We could not tweak the animation because of deadline issues, and we decided to leave it that way, so we could learn from it (and from your comments).

Awh i've seen this alot of time!

Man did i love it!! Great job ppl!

Anywayz one question tough... why post it 2 times?! i mean some like it some dis-like it, but are you going to change anythinge?! or something?!

Just a question cauze i remember if somone had any crit on your animation you ppl got pissed off lolz!

thats great for your 2nd effort.
my bad for not explaining myself a little better
i wasnt talking about your animation. More on the flow of the story.
i totally understood the whole story. when i said "it almost felt like you think the audience won't understand" what i ment here was, some of the scenes could be shorten to change the pace of the story, and you could probably lose a few shots as well and the story will still hold up. and i dont mean to change them for this short its just something to keep in mind for your next shortfilm.
i see you have a lot of passion for this work and it shows in your comments. if you dont like people critiquing i dont dont see why you post it here in the first place. its only my opinion, you can take it or leave it. i dont care.
if any of this doesnt make sence you dont need to flip out. just ask me to explain a bit better, i'll do my best.

anyway keep up the good work.

@ geekbot

I don't remember (and I'm looking at my post to you) flipping out? I was just explaining why some shots were not as good, why the editing could have been better etc.

I did not flip out on you...where did you read that?

@ Gangstashers

Thanks for you comments!

"Just a question cauze i remember if somone had any crit on your animation you ppl got pissed off lolz!" - well, that is so not true. We commented (maybe in a harsh way) on the way people commented on our animation. Would you accept a comment like: it was not interesting...with no reason at all? We like to have an explaination why people like or dislike it. Why? That's why! - is so unfair if you made something and people critize it like that. You don't learn anything about it. Why bother commenting? That's why we've got pissed off, not because of negative comments. It's a misunderstanding.

But thanks for asking. I hope you understand.

ow, why we post it a second time? Well, because our thread became a discussion not about the movie, but about how to critize, which was lame.

Ahh ok :)!

Hey i had another question tough.. i remember you said you only had 1 year expierence with lightwave?! Did you go to a special school?

Sheherryar

Cannonball
08-07-2005, 12:08 PM
The 'Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam' - which is not so special to begin with. It's not a filmschool or something where most animations on this site come from. We did Multimedia Design, so you get a lot of different stuff (websites, 3d, video), but not too specific.

Yes, I (cannonball) had a year of experience in LW, but the other members only for a few months. This was our first short with a character (bones, morphtargets etc) and with a decent storyline. So everything was new. If we read the comments here on Cgtalk and on other sites, I think we did a good job!

So thanks to all for the crits and raves. Keep them coming!

"my bad for not explaining myself a little better"

You made yourself perfectly clear in your first post. There was nothing wrong with it. But I really don't recall flipping out towards you. I'm sorry if I did, but I only explained some stuff in my post, but I don't see anything what is indicating to flipping out towards you.

Sorry if I did. And thanks for your comments!

well, the whole piece is over seven minutes long when it could have been roughly three and a half. although i think this is a great first attempt at a short (i mean, hey, at least you finished it....most groups can't say even that) it has characteristics typical of student work, in that the editing and amount of shots seem to make the story drag. i have to agree with geekbot. if you remove unnecessary shots and sharpen up the edits, you'll be able keep the viewers' attention longer. for example, nothing happens in the story until two minutes into it (that's when the balloon gets a bird dropping surprise). I was in planet Gozar by the time that happened.

however, that isn't to say that i didn't like it. i thought the way the balloon was handled made him extremely lovable. and despite some of the criticisms about the sound effects, i believe they gave the balloon's movements personality. the story was simple, and it's a good thing too (another mistake students make with their first short is: they over-complexify).

if you're a student of some sort of art school, then you are at a great advantage, because you can easily walk over to the film department and either get killer tips on how to edit for modern viewers (this is the mtv generation) or get a student editor to help you out. this is something i always try to do when working in projects.

keep swingin' that bat.

Cannonball
08-12-2005, 10:26 AM
Thanks for you comments! I agree with the editing parts, some parts could have been sharpened up. I also agree with the intro. As for the pacing: this short is ment to be on dvd and to be viewed on a tv, we noticed that watching a short on a computer demands a much shorter story with a higher pace to get attention. If you sit down watching a tv or cinemascreen, the pacing is alot better...but still could have been improved.

I'm not a student of an art school. I don't like the mtv-generation, and I would never make a film edited like that (with all those jumpcuts and fast imagery, i'll leave that to Darren). But a pro editor could make the movie better, but I think it would be best to have an editor around during the whole proces of making the film, to have a better overview and to give some idea's about the pacing of the story. But then...we could have had an pro animator, modeler and matte painter around to make it perfect...:)

Next time we'll do better (we have a lifetime ahead of us). You'll see.

Hi guys! I'm one of the co-creators of Inflate Escape. I'm really happy that some people know how to comment. The information we get on this and other forums we take it seriously and use it for the future (or present).

I understand most comments about the pace. But you (people who find the movie a bit slow) definitely have to know that there is a difference in experiencing an animation or movie on a PC and a TV. But that doesn't mean i completely disagree with people that find some pieces of this animation a bit slow :).

Keep up with the great comments
