View Full Version : mirroring weights (maya)

if someone would be so kind as to tell me if there is any way to mirror weights in maya, w/out just duplicating one side and attaching it.

I've rigged a couple of characters, but having to weight, -ex. all the verts for the left hand and then do the exact same thing on the opposite side, becomes rather tiresome.

Yeah, there should be a mirror weights button in the shelf, or you could go to Skin > Edit Smooth Skin > Mirror Skin Weights. Make sure your model is lined up correctly on the grid, with it's center point at 0, or else it won't want to work right. Also make sure your skeleton is in the bind pose. Hope that helps :).

oh sorry, i forgot to mention im working w/ rigid skin. Is it actually better to work w/ smooth skin, i only tried it once a while back and it just seemed like a hassle.
