View Full Version : When things collide...a newbie question
dawsonbob 07-20-2005, 04:57 PM Another basic newbie question here. When moving an object is there any setting to keep it from passing through another object? In one of the programs I used to use (Carrara) there was a setting called "Use collision detection" that did just that: prevented one object from passing through another.
Is there a similar command in C4D? I've searched all the menus and the manual and can't find anything. I'm using version 8.2.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

No, unfortunately there's no such animal in Cinema. It can be done with Xpresso and/or Dynamics, but it's not something you'd want to do on a daily basis.

Bummer. It's such a useful feature and one, one would think, easily implemented. It would save me hours on my current project.
Thanks, Adam, for the quick response.

Hours being the operative word for Dynamics, the calculations are painfully slow.

So it's hours either way, since there is no collision detection in Cinema. This is only a still for print, so I don't think Dynamics would be an option in any event. Besides, I only own the XL Bundle, which doesn't include Dynamics.
I'm somewhat surprised that no plugin developer has whipped something this useful up in their spare time. All I'm trying to do is make a string of spheres (30) rest against the inside of a curved surface (like a basin). It's rather annoying that they keep dropping through the bottom instead of resting on the surface. Oh, well, I have plenty of time on this one.
Thanks,

You could try Fizz, that is a free plugin that should do what you want, you can get it here :-

Thank you, Jon. I'll give Fizz a try and see how it works. I've switched to another project for the moment (deadline on this one), but I'll try Fizz this evening.
Thanks again,
