Title: Architecture Of Color And Identity
Name: Richard Minh Le
Country: Australia
Software: 3ds max
This is my recent artwork, named "Architecture of Color and Identity". I always like the process of interprete architecture, and the freshness in color of the Copic marker. So, I thought, maybe, it will be interesting to come up with an city, that is constructed out of this pen. It, somehow, shows the sense of an open space and the coded identity of each urban fabric. The color of this reflects my enjoyment to the color system of the pen.
This is my very first post. Hope to see a lot of your critics.
Some tech info:
3ds max, Vray
Project duration: 10hs
Rendering time: 35hs
Original res: 3k, 300DPI
This is wireframed render

Thanks for all yr great comments,
I had a look at the model, but could not figure it out why that text appeared embossed.
Hope show another artwork soon,
Excellent! It's great!
I love the idea of having streets with traffic between the pen bases. It would look amazing!

Could you please supply a wireframe, from a different angle? I'm not saying that this isn't you. But I have seen this somewhere else. A year or two ago. Since you said this was your latest work, it just seems odd to me that I have seen it before.
Cheers
Edit: In my bleary pre-coffee moment I realized that I came off wrong in my above post.
:) What I wanted to ask was: Where have I seen it before?

I don't see how you troubleshoot a render that takes 35 hours. Do you render quicker images first or what? Would the faster images not give the same results? Wouldn't you still have to do 2-3 of the longer renders to see how it would turn out or did you just get lucky with this first one? I am impressed with the render.

I like it but don't think the city idea comes across strongly enough for me.
Just looks like a close-up of a bunch of markers to me. Maybe you could take it further and have some spilled indian ink a a river....just needs some more hints maybe a bunch of markers pulled up to give it a manhatten feel?

With no doubt it's a wonderful work!
Even though I think that some space between "buildings" to simulate streets would have been better.
Anyway I'm very impressed for the renderng time! Oh, I would like to change those "hs" in "min"...

I agree with R1pper... initially, I didn't read the description below the image, and just assumed it was a still-life of a bunch of Copic markers (I use Copic Sketch markers, myself ;)).
The major issue with the markers as buildings, if that is the intention, is that there is not enough space between them. Even in a very dense, tightly-packed urban environment, there are breaks in the architecture for streets, etc. Adding in these breaks, and perhaps some other, more fanciful visuals (windows in the sides of the markers, for example) would help further the illusion of a city of markers.
As it stands, this is a beatifully-done still life. Excellent modeling, lighting, and rendering. Keep up the good work!

thanks guys, your comments are great
My vision towards art (including music) is that, sometimes, it doesnt have to be so obvious of the massage, which artist wanna send. It should leave some space for the viewers to freely interprete, to feel it in their own right. Yet, it can be confusing. However, by owning this characteristics, the artwork tends to have a mutual link between the viewers and the creators, not just a direct, one-way 'route' from the creators.
I love instrumental music, because of that.

First i will say... I love this piece... http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif from me
Also studing architecture I completly understand the reason for an indirect piece of art. The more I observe the more that is revieled to me... maybe I am begining to read to deeply but I do really enjoy this work.
Has this art derived from a concept developed within your course?

Well, This, actually, isnt a concept for any particular subject the school of Architecture, RMIT, where i am finishing off the course. It is more of the way RMIT trains their students to focus more on the design process, and idea rather than the final outcomme.

Nice job lighting the scene and great camera angle. I also like the use of DoF. Not too much, not too little, but just right. The scene kind of reminds me of those basalt rock formations found in Northern Ireland. (The Giant's Causeway... I think...)
Well done!

Beautiful work!
Like people have said, the city idea doesn't come across as strong as it could, however, if you hadn't explained it in the beginning it wouldn't be an issue. Clearly if you look at the peice for a while you can see it resembles a city, and it's obviously not meant to be "a city made out of markers" the same way one would make "a city made out of lego"...
Perhaps experimenting with the camera angle rather than the formation of the markers would change people's perception. For example, having the camera at the level of the desk and looking up at the markers...?
I have no problem with how it is, I think it's fantastic! Excellent composition, lighting, rendering, DoF, etc.
Great job!
kamal_61
07-27-2005, 01:05 AM
Somehow I can't see the rendering as Architectural. It looks like a table-top setup, confined to a space kinda feeling. The lighting is the problem, I think. Maybe its my perspective. Still, it is great job
Garma
07-27-2005, 01:10 AM
hey great piece. I dig original concepts.
For the critics about taking the idea further, I kinda agree, it would do the picture good, but on the other hand: It would be hard to do consistently. For example, adding a river: what would you make it off? Same goes for roads, those ask for cars. What I especially like about this picture is that it's markers only. which means you cannot add cars & water convincingly
I would've kept the background markers also vertically. I like the forms but maybe I'd had them sticking out of the ground or something, in a circular way, resembling fountains and stuff.

very nice rendering and a good dof.
i really like it - not only because copic are the best.
only one thing i have to mention besides the E07C dropshadow, its the specular / light reflection on the (bevel?-) corner on the C07C and the one behind - in my eyes its too hard.
everything thing else looks... perfect i think. three thumps up.

First rate work, very inspiring. I love the composition, lighting and vibrant color. Great stuff.
Only question I have is are some of the markers made of plastic and some of metal? Some don't have reflections or much specular, while others do. Is that just the way the light's catching them?
You should sell the rights to Copic as the cornerstone of a website redesign. The current one blows harder than a Beverly Hills hooker. God knows they charge enough for the markers to afford a new one.
Look for yourself...http://www.copicmarker.com/
Can't wait to see what you do next!

Incredibly realistic !
You achieved a great deal of light and colors, you are a very talented artist!
this is a photorealistic art! 35hs render? what sistem r u using to render it?
You could try diferent angles and open some "streets" or so, but since art is subjective, I would say your composition is perfect.
 :scream: GREAT!
Congratulations!

Thanks severyone for your generous comments
I think, perhaps, some copics appears metal because of the HDRI. However, I am still figuring out the exact reason.
I used Vray for this render on the AMD athlon 3000+, 2Gb RAM and Quadro4 360 64mb. It took that much of time to render because of the high setting. I was so passionate of it, so, I set the DOF subdivision way too high, 50, and the irradiance preset, very high. I could have come up with the same result costing less rendering time. Anyway, I think 35hs is still worth it.
I am big fan of photography and the art of it. I think rendering can be so damn realistic, but the highest level it can go to is a bad photo, without art and thoughts.

Just a tip...not sure if this has already been mentioned...but did you do the depth of field in the same pass as the render. I think if you had rendered the image without DOF and post processed the DOF in it would have cut down the render time a lot...just an idea.
Very nice image though...nice lighting, texturing..good composition :)

09-08-2005, 10:19 AM
if you look at the E07C pen, the embos on it might just be a visual "trick"
i know it shouldn't be like that, but the text on the pen looks thicker than the rest too, its also the darkest pen in focus and hence i say just a visual "trick".. i didn't even notice b4, oh well
still this is amazing, of all the images i've looked at this one looks the most realistic, at first i thought it had just been a photo but then i read what yoo said again lol
the only thing i see that makes it look like a rendering is the hardness of the pen-tip in the foreground.. hard to notice and the rest of the rendering MORE than makes up for it:thumbsup: :applause:

very good imagination, ideas are well delivered!
the color works as well as the modern structures it stands for, vivid colors! good for symbolizing contemporrary architecture.
ive always loved copic markers, not just cause they are great to render traditionally, but the way they systematically lineup in those little display boxes in the art shop. its always so well presented and looks so enticing with the spectrum of colours. you really captured that in your artwork, but you gave it a new idea and a great concept. all the codes and titles given to each marker signifies a different identitiy and colour, and you emphasised that by making the codes visible. this is really well done, i like it alot <3

Hi Richard,
It's great to meet you. Your image is sooo real. . . I mean -- Wow -- It's fantastic!
But 35 hours? I don't get that. I know GI takes awhile but even for a 2k x 4k ppi image, compositing individual passes, each pass shouldn't take more than 2 hours. I suppose it counts on how many lights are spraying photons and casting shadows in your scene but I'm having trouble understanding that time. Have you considered laying up passes in Photoshop? CS2 supports realistic lense blurs and depth maps for pulling focus.
Anyway, great work and congratulations!
